As a few others have noted, this would be more enjoyable to read in a literature class where the thought and criticisms of others could sharpen the story a bit. It is quite dreamy and lets you float away with not many points of grabbing your attention back. I do like Mrs. Dalloway as a character, and her reminiscings were thoughtful and quiet.

At times an enjoyable intimate look at the thoughts and feelings of its characters and at other times a slog of a read that seemed to ramble on with little coherency.

Gah, I completely fumbled this book by listening to it. Whilst some books are made by narration, I think this one was actually hindered, particularly by the quite lacking version that I listened to which made it less relatable and understanding than if I had read it.

Even so, I can see the enormous potential of this book. Woolf’s prose is fast and punchy, her wit is evident, and her deep analysis of societal themes is interesting. However it just wasn’t as good as I hoped especially given I’ve loved books heavily inspired by this novel like The Wedding People. Maybe another audio version or physically reading this book would have boosted my enjoyment, and if so I am crabby about that. However, I am still excited for reading more of Woolf’s work particularly Orlando which I just hope hope hope that I love love love.

I can’t deny that Virginia Woolf is a genius and captures so much about humanity in such a short book, this one just wasn’t for me. I read this book mainly because I wanted to read The Hours by Michael Cunningham and I can’t stand the thought of not knowing a reference. Overall, I am glad I read it. I enjoyed the themes Woolf was playing with here such as the horrors of time passing, the poor treatment of the mentally ill, and homosexuality in post WW1 England. The criticisms of the upper class English society was also interesting, although very nuanced as Clarissa’s love of throwing parties is described as stupid but also noble. I just couldn’t get into this one at all and every page was like pulling teeth. There were pieces of beauty and brilliance that kept me hanging on for the full 200ish pages but I just couldn’t seem to get myself to care about literally anything that happened. I want to keep reading her works though, as I think she’s a very interested writer who was ahead of her time.
