I am a sucker for a ballet book, and this one did not disappoint. The world of dance is darker than people realize, but I think it makes sense if you think about it. Any profession that’s so meticulous and so much about the human body must be. The Paris/St Petersburg settings of this story were both magical to me, and the way each chapter got closer and closer to combining the dual storylines worked really well. The characters definitely all bothered me in their own ways, mainly the sheer selfishness of the majority of them, but I also admired their passion for the ballet.

The Ballerinas takes us into the world of ballet through the eyes of three ballerinas who struggle to be at the top of a Paris ballet institute through the years. Though the novel is mostly told by Delphine in dual timelines we can feel the struggles that the other two women face in this competitive arena. This is a story of friendships and competition as well. The novel deals with #meToo and women abuse and how this changes the life of these women forms the crux of this novel.

When I picked up this book from the library and saw the genre sticker say "Thriller" I honestly started laughing. Laughing because it's so true. This book isn't your "typical" thriller, but anyone who has ever been in the dance world, being ballet or any other type, knows that it's honestly scary. People when Black Swan came out where shocked at its extremeness and how far Natalie Portman's character would go for the part, but in all truth that's so true. I thankfully got out of the ballet world when mousing your bangs for a recital was too chaotic for me!

ANYWAY...that being said I absolutely loved this book because it brought back a past time that I truly enjoyed when I was younger. Seeing the ballet world in the more real "adult" theme is what needs to be read more about. Obviously this is fiction so some things may not be so believable but say what you want. It did have slight a slow start, but other than that once I got past that hump I couldn't put the book down. The twists and turns that were revealed were honestly amazing. My favorite thing about this book was Margaux, Delphine, and Lindsay. The three girls, now women, who were the best of friends and the everything they went through during their time at the Paris Opera Ballet both in the past and present. The back and forth of the past/present didn't bother me one bit and it was overall a great book! Definitely recommending!

I had to listen to this after hearing so many great reviews. What a story.. and that ending
