I was a bit confused at first because so many characters were introduced at once but wow I loved all of them so much.

I would like to preface this review by letting you guys know that I am not usually a contemporary reader. I prefer Fantasy and Sci-Fi to anything else, and I would't usually pick up a contemporary novel like this on my own. That being said, I am so glad I was sent this book in my December Owlcrate, because, guys, this book is amazing.
One of my main reasons for not being a huge contemporary fans is that I don't tend to enjoy fluffy stuff. I think the reason I enjoyed Foolish Hearts so much is because it had substance. Of course, high school substance is far different than fantasy "you need to save your kingdom and the entire world" substance, but it was still substance. This is a book about relationships, not just in the romantic sense, but friendships and family relationships as well.
The romantic aspect of this book followed three relationships of different stages. One specifically involved a lesbian couple who's story arc wasn't all about them coming out (!!!!!). I was so excited by the fact that coming out wasn't a main plot point for those two characters, but it was more about personal growth and development and how that or lack of that can impact a relationship. It was really cool to see a "normal" portrayal of LGBTQIA+ relationships. The family aspect of this book dealt with some of the more serious "real life" issues. I truly enjoyed Claudia's family's dynamic. It was relatable and really showed that strength and love a family can have, even if they're not perfect.
My favorite aspect of this book though were the friendships, and I actually believe (unlike some who think this is first and foremost a romancey contemporary) that the friendships were the main point of this book. The friendships felt real and raw and natural. I felt like I was reading about me and my high school group of friends when I was reading this book, and I loved that it didn't just show perfect friendships. There was fighting and arguments, but there was also the support and love that a real friendship will have.
Foolish Hearts was incredibly well written, with witty characters and funny jokes that had me laughing out loud as I was reading and sobering moments of "real life" that brought me close to tears. The dialogue was engaging and real, the character were relatable and had story driven character development. The romances were organic and believable...in short, this book was a perfect contemporary read. I devoured this book in a few hours and loved every single minute of it. If you love contemporary (and honestly, even if you're not sure about it like I was), read this book.

This is exactly what I needed during a pandemic. So cute and simple and precious. I’m only knocking off a star because Claudia was SO oblivious and so 17 for 80% of the novel that I wanted to scream.
It's been a long time since I gave a YA contemporary 5 stars, and here we are.
This is so easily one of my new all-time favourite YA contemporary books. I would have loved to read this when I was 15-16 years old because I can tell I would have really related to it. The humour is great, the teens act and talk like teens, everything is just so authentic.
I really loved all the relationships in this, especially Claudia's friendship with Iris! What started off rocky quickly turned into a great friendship. I loved the portrayal of gaming and forming friendships over bands and bonding over music. Music, bands and concerts were an essential part of my teenage years and young Taryn would've loved this so much.
I am so so so so glad that teenagers today get to grow up in a world where this book exists. It portrays messy teens navigating friendships, relationships, high school and more. Such a great read & one I imagine I will be recommending for a long time to come.

Gahhhhhhhhh that was soooo good
I feel like it smoothed out all the overworked muscles in my soul
Also that was not where I thought it was going to go when I picked this up but that misunderstanding is on me.

Rating is so hard. Is Foolish Hearts "Big Great Literature" a la depressing Russians? No. But it made me laugh, melted away my anxiety, had characters that seemed flesh and bone and not ink and paper. It was sweet, heart felt, and fun. So, yes, it deserves five stars. It's a different sort of five stars that I'd give Anna Karenina, but whatever. Rating is completely subjective.
my perfect little family ☹️☹️ i love all of them sm this was such a fun read
