Took this book from my dad’s collection because I wanted something new and random to read. I found this so witty and funny! A random gem of a surprise when all said and read.

Fabulous

This its most definitely a tale. A wonderful tale worth reading, perhaps on the beach in Bali if you have the chance. Allan's view of life is that whatever happens, happens. If those things involve the avoidance of religion and politics but include a nice glass of vodka, Allan is satisfied for the most part. His knowledge of explosives and easy way with a conversation get him in and out of trouble all over the world. His key is accepting what comes and knowing when he can change it.

Honestly, I find these half-baked comparisons to Forrest Gump insulting. Gump is an imbecile motivated by love for a handful of people. The amusing thing of him meeting famous people is he doesn't know who they are. His compassion, a couple of unusual skills and a lot of dumb luck see him through but can't save him from the pain around him.

Allan on the other hand doesn't have much compassion; he just knows who he likes and what he's good at. He meets famous people because of his skills. He doesn't care who they are though because he has no respect for politics or religious movements. They are basic differences that give Allan a happy ending.

I like quirky books so I was destined to like this novel. It was a very entertaining read and it's naivety just added to the overall enjoyment. You can't help liking the 100 year-Old-Man in spite of it's unbelievable but quaintly surrealistic story.

Okay,
I didn't really finish this book.
I enjoyed the parts in the present but the history behind Allan during the war killed me. I couldn't concentrate and it was SO boring to me.
It just dragged a lot.
Maybe I'll reread it again in the future. But so far, didn't dig it very much.

Sometimes it's just great to take a break from reality and get drawn into a story that's not only cleverly written and hilarious but full of shenanigans as well. Not everyone has the gift to be that creative and indeed this author does. The story goes back and forth with the past and present history of the 100 year old man, Allan Karlsson who is not happy with life in a senior home and decides on his birthday to spirit away. He makes his escape through a window and as he goes along his merry way he runs into a young man who asks him to watch his suitcase while he uses the restroom. Allan makes off with the case not knowing or caring what it contains and the story involves into a hunt by criminals, the police and reporters. Along the way he collects a group of colorful characters who join him and with a couple of unfortunate mishaps the story progresses. I was entertained and delighted with this read and the way the author mixed in some bits of history was very well done. Highly recommend. I listened to the audio version of the book as performed by Steven Crossley and he was excellent with all the different voices for the characters.

The flat, plain-spoken prose was slightly off-putting at first, but the charm and absurdity of the story won me over.
