This is such nostalgic fun for me. I'm so happy to be rereading these. Probably won't give complex reviews because these are just childhood favorites & I don't know that I can really summon critical thoughts on them.

First time reading it, it was wicked good!! The audiobook with a full cast of characters was amazing and really brought the story to life.
Lyra was an amazing character and reminded me of Matilda, a brave little girl with a strong sense of fairness, with a streak of rebelliousness and mischief. I absolutely adored her!!
Not sure if I’ll continue with this series (spoiler towards the end: they brought out the Bible and explaining Genesis and dust, which was a lil weird and unexpected… kinda took me out of the fantasy world. Considering the ending portion on what Lyra plans on doing next, I expect there’ll be more of that :/ )

While I don't have much of interest to add to the conversation, I will say that I find it comforting that in a world of witches, talking bears and personalized daemons, there is still Texas. Also, having listened to the audiobook (which is more like an old fashioned-radio drama than an audiobook) in which the voice actor for Lyra was quite amazing, I wondered if I would find it as charming if, without the benefit of the audio, one of the characters responded with just, "Yeah."
What I liked the most, actually, was the bonus interview at the end of the audiobook between Ruth Wilson (one of my favorites) and the author, Philip Pullman. I particularly appreciated his understanding that stories for children don't need to be dumbed down. It reminded me of my insistence, while raising my kids, that they only watch tv shows that were smart.
