While reading this book I was so frustrated. So here's this girl, don't know what her name is( that's one of the frustrating parts she got two names :/) and she lives on an island. She's the daughter of the head chief of the island. Almost like the first daughter( at least I think so). So then these white dudes come and they say they want to hunt the seals. The natives say they can only do this if they give them half of their catch. The white( I think their Russian) dudes agree and then start fishing or whatever. So here comes the annoying, frustrating, irritating part. After a few days or so the natives see that the Russian dudes are leaving, without giving them anything. The chief asks them about this and they make up some excuse. Then they pull out an arrow or knife or something and kill the chief with it. UGHhhhhHHHHHHHH. After that the whole village decides to leave and go to another island. So the protagonist and her brother are all set to go with the others. They're on the boats and everything. Then suddenly her brother realizes he "forgot something". I wanted to go through the pages in that book and choke him. I really did. So he goes and swims back to the island, and being his big sister and everything, the girl swims after him. UGhhhhhHHH. By the time they get back to shore, the boats are gone.

I can't even tell you the rest of the book without wanting to scream so I won't. Besides,I want YOU to read it and then you will see just how frustrating this book really is.

This book fascinated me as a child, and I loved sharing it with my kiddos and witnessing their fascination unfurl. We read it around the campfire while camping.

this book has loved beautiful in my imagination for a decade and a half and the reread did not disappoint. (also this edition had the most beautiful illustrations to add to the magic.)
