This was a re-read for me. I
first read this book as a class in 5th grade. To this day I would think about this book. Now after
my re-read, even as an adult, I still found it so enjoyable, emotional and cathartic.

I find the subject more interesting, but it felt like a Hemingway with writing. It lacked a lot of emotion, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but did cause it to fall short for me personally. I don’t know if the age group this book is targeted for would be able to put in the emotions necessary to complete the story as intended.

Also, I'm not sure the natives would value jewelry as payment since it seems like outsiders rarely visited this island so there wouldn't be any trade. Especially with a village with less than 100 people.

A girl is stranded on an island 75 miles southwest of Los Angeles for 18 years. Written in 1960. From the tools she made, how she hunted yet respected the environment, and how she socialized with the animals, this is what a survival story looks like.

Outstanding! A true classic.

read this in childhood. It was a fav

I totally remember reading this book with my class in Grade 4. And making a diorama of the house she builds.

Very interesting introduction and archaeological essay and footnotes to lend context and added knowledge to a book I loved but did not think critically about as a child. Would rec
