I knew this book was going to be powerful, but I underestimated how strong it really was.

It's broken into two parts. The first occurs in 1949, the latter occurs in a more modern Gaza (2017 is when the book was originally written). I personally found the 1949 half more intriguing, but this means little when the entire work was so meaningful and deep. The latter, more modern narrative was intense and heartbreaking, a testament to suffering and trauma.

A quick warning: there mentions of and allusions to violence and sexual assault, as well as descriptions of bombing and occupation forces with weapons and without mercy.

I recommend this one, but it is intense, and the reader should be aware of that going into this.

There’s an old saying I’ve heard about tragedies, don’t show the faces of many tell the story of one. I think this book does such a great job of that. Giving us a main character, whose pretty quirky, and showing how hard her life is as a Palestinian. Making the apartheid Palestinians experience so visceral and personal. My one criticism is the beginning half through the soldier’s POV. I didn’t like the writing as much as the rest of the book. Although I get why it was told (for context), the rest of the story was far more compelling.

“Sometimes it’s inevitable for the past to be forgotten, especially if the present is no less horrific.”

“The truth of it will never stop chasing me.”

so I believe the old woman and the girl we see in the end or the same girl in the beginning. Also once we found out that this was a military shooting area, I thought they would use her as target practice. Then when she put her hand in her pocket for gum I was like well she is going to die now. Then she did.

Heavy book that’s not for the faint of heart but important and the author fits so much of Palestinian present and past in the short novella and I will have to reread to get the symbolism with the dogs and the smell of gasoline
