The Last Werewolf by Glen Duncan

I'm sorry to say that I have to DNF this book. The premise was so promising, but the writing is verging on pretentious, I don't connect with the characters and the plot is just not taking off. Like my wifey says: "life is too short to read books we don't like". It also applies to book that don't catch our interest.

I love reexamining horror archetypes and Jacob the werewolf certainly has a vivid and fresh narrative. Duncan's writing borders on a stream of consciousness and it's fun to read.
There were a few things that stopped this book from being really great.
1.The story starts to fall apart at the end. A lot is hinted at and left unresolved. Like WTF is up with Maddie, the vampires, Granier's past etc.
2. Talula has so much potential as a character but her portion of the story felt really flat and predictable compared to Jacob's(and as other reviewers pointed out she speaks in a painfully unAmerican voice).
P.S. If Doubleday is looking for an American dialect editor I'd be interested in taking the position. Whoever you have now needs to be fired.

Compelling. A page-turner, and a neat take on the whole basket of werewolf tropes. Am curious to figure out how the world develops, especially regarding the Macguffin journal thing. Don't know if that's enough to make me pick up the next book though.

Gotta love a book with world weary immortals, especially suicidal immortals who can't yet bring themselves to die.

It sounded like a really great concept, but honestly, the book just seemed like an excuse for the author to talk about erections a lot. I mean, A-LOT!

Jake's story is somewhat interesting, but when things changed I thought they changed for the worst.

The style too came across to me like a bad highbrow version of Mickey Spillane,

Bored. Next!

At first I was not sure if I would like this book; it took about a quarter of it for me to warm to the author's writing style. He also has an affection for ridiculously obscure words, which occasionally gave me pause. But once I reached halfway I was hooked. A first person account of the last werewolf's life, lousy with introspection, told by a 200 year old werewolf who is ready to die. I look forward to reading the rest of the series, the twist is intriguing.

I loved this book so much! It was so well written. It explored interesting ideas in interesting ways. AND it's about a freaking werewolf!

However, I will never be able to recommend this book to anyone because he is constantly, explicitly obsessed with graphic sex.

This was not your standard werewolf story. The writing was quite good. The author is clearly someone who thinks. There was nothing glamorous about werewolfdom, just pain and being hunted. An interesting read.

The only female character that wasn’t immediately sexualized was killed within a page.

That guy who spent the entire party talking at you about Quentin Tarantino wrote a werewolf book.

The concept is fun but it hasn’t aged well, that self-effacing ironic humour of the 2010s is in full force. This is a re-read for me, originally I read it in about 2015, I remember enjoying it more back then.

That being said I’m gonna read the next two because I’m attached to the characters now and I’m a sucker for werewolves.

Needlessly vulgar and inelegant stream if consciousness. Ambivalent about whether or not I'll read the next one.
