Ah, finally done with this novel. I honestly grew so accustomed to these horribly selfish characters over the weeks I spent finishing the story, they feel like people I know on a very personal level, and I think that really says something about Fitzgerald. Her doesn't write his characters as simple-minded, stereotypical people. This book was entirely character development with a tiny bit of plot, which is a personal preference of mine, really. The blurb on the back of the book says that Anthony and Gloria's relationship was largely based on Scott's own relationship with his wife, Zelda. If that is true, then it's the most tragic thing I could imagine for Fitzgerald. The couple in this novel were tragic in the most beautiful way.

The more I read of Fitzgerald, the more I understand where he is coming from. All of his books are partly autobiographical though the Beautiful and the Damned is, in some ways, prophetic of his own path in life. I al looking forward to reading The Great Gatsby, considered the best of his novels. It is hard to separate Fitzgerald's novels from the man himself and I don't think they would be as interesting if there was a divide.
