I always so badly want to like vampire romances, but I'm just bored.

Blood Orange by Karina Halle was an intense and thrilling ride from start to finish. A dark romance with vampires, witches, and a hidden underworld? Yes please—especially when the vampire is literally Dracula, and our FMC is a vampire slayer. ✨
Make it unhinged, steamy, and dark, and you’ve got the perfect mix to keep me completely hooked. The setting in Venice? Obsessed. Gothic, eerie, and sensual—picture the fog rolling in over moonlit canals, gondolas gliding by, and a tall, dark vampire who just so happens to be your teacher… hiding a deadly secret. But is he really the villain? 👀
If you're into fated mates, forbidden romance, teacher/student dynamics, and spice that burns, this is 100% for you. But do check the trigger warnings!
Can’t wait for book 2—because that ending? I need answers.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ — fangs out, 5 stars.

I did not vibe with the writing style, which made it difficult to persevere.

This whole story felt like a really bad Dracula fanfic. Normally I would be down, but it was so lackluster, the plot was nonexistent, and the main character made no sense. She allegedly has vampire trauma, but jumps into bed with her “target” as soon as the opportunity presents itself. Overall boring and not even the mystery plot could save the raging teenage hormone and explicit sex scenes from being awful.  Magic was not super well defined, just sort of vague Wiccanish witchy business. Not impressed at all.
Also, tell me you haven’t had anal sex without telling me you haven’t had anal sex. A very well endowed man just slipping in no prep, with a bit of lube and force? Talk about anal fissures. No thanks.

I went into this duet with excitement, but unfortunately I was a little disappointed. They were OK! Don’t get me wrong, I was enthralled & blew through both books on a weekend. I loved the author’s writing style and the whole vibe kept me hooked.

HE (Valtu) is a vampire.
SHE is a witch and a trained vampire killer.
The side characters were fantastic - I think I liked them better than the MCs sometimes. So I did order the three books involving them. There was a lot of great history built behind all the characters, very well-developed.

These books are more spice than plot though.
