I read a review that said to read the short story prequel "The First Shot" before reading this and I'm SO GLAD I did!! I feel like it's so essential to this sequel. The order the books should be read are: The Last Mrs. Parrish, The First Shot, The Next Mrs. Parrish.
That ending!!!! It was so dark and disturbingly satisfying. I loved this book so much. Perfect sequel to an amazing book. 5 stars!!!!

The story picks up with Daphne living in California with her two girls, Tallulah and Bella. Amber is married to Jackson, and has son, Jax, with him in Bishop’s Harbor. Jackson is finishing out his prison sentence, and only has about a month left. Tallulah has been acting out and escapes her camp to go visit her dad. She is caught and sent home, but Daphne is worried it could happen again. Per her therapist’s encouragement, she decides to spend the summer in Bishop’s Harbor to let the girls spend some time with their father. Of course, there is lots of scheming by Amber and Jackson, resulting in some twists and turns. This was entertaining; and the narrator did a good job. Honestly, I didn’t remember a lot from book 1, but this was easy to follow. I think this could even be read as a stand-alone, as enough back story is given, so you can understand the dynamic between Daphne, Jackson, and Amber.

I had a hard time feeling invested in this book, maybe it’s because it’s been a while since I read the first one. It was slow at first but picks up at the end.
I know I read the first one a while ago, but I’m now having an existential crisis, since I remember the first one being so good and being shocked by the twist. Was it actually good? Cause this one was not. Am I remembering it wrong? Woof. Stop at one book if you can’t live up to the hype for a second. The characters are so one dimensional and the plot unrealistic. Don’t waste your time like I just did.

"The house isn't in your name."
Amber, Jackson, and Daphne are back with more drama.
This one definitely didn't excite me the way the first did. A lot of the characters' decision making feels plot driven and inorganic. There are a number of things that don't make sense for professionals to say or do. It doesn't make sense that people accept them either.
Daphne and Amber both feel like they've been flattened some. Neither is morally ambiguous. Daphne is saintly and Amber is a straight villain despite being someone you want to root for.
The ending is mostly satisfying, but getting there can be frustrating. I didn't like the cliffhanger bit with one character.
The story benefits from the performances of the audiobook. I enjoyed the inclusion of Daisy Anne. Apparently we can get more of her in the series prequel, "The First Shot", which I haven't read.
I'd recommend this to people interested in more after the first who don't want to take things too seriously.
