sounds terrible to say about a book published in 1998 but this was an absolute blast from the past. the britain that bryson is comparing to america is almost entirely foreign to the britain i’ve lived my adult life in. (for example he says it’s ridiculous that certain american places won’t let you smoke inside - not like good ‘ol blighty!)
self deprecating, sarcastic and silly as well as leaving with me with a few more facts than i started with. standard bill bryson.

Got like 2/3 of the way into this because I wanted something light — couldn’t stand to finish it!

This was mixed, which I guess comes for it being a collection of columns. Some of it has not aged especially well (a lot of defence of smoking indoors for example). Definitely prefer his travel writing.

While more about American idiosyncracies (real or perceived) than expat-specific observations, I still enjoyed this collection of Bill Bryson's perfectly bite-sized essays.
