was returned to the library when I wasn't able to renew it at the time, but also probably won't pursue checking it out again-- was starting to just get crochety and gripey vs. humorous
This is a collection of columns that Bryson wrote reflecting on life in the U.S. There were many very funny and "spot-on" reflections on U.S. life. I liked this better than the Europe/England books (those seemed to be more riddled with long narratives about taking a train, that was horrible, between two points, and upon arrival, how hard it was to find a hotel and then how bad the hotel was). At any rate, this book seemed more focused, and raised more specific questions/critiques from an "I moved away 20 years ago then came back, so I'm an outsider" perspective. I liked the "why does the car dominate" and "I like the postal service" and "some of the (immigration, and other) bureaucracy is really ridiculous", gardening, and overabundance of choice themes. This was a fun read (listen.. I had the audiobook).
Funny and good, but dated material to read in 2019.

If I could only read books from one author for the rest of my life it would be no question to me that I would choose Bill Bryson. Whenever I'm in a bad mood or simply just wanting to have a fun time it's no question to me to pick up books from this wonderful and witty author. First of all he's hilarious and brilliant, his view on the world is amazing and relatable. I love him so much and I can assure you if you love humor and traveling you'll find a new all time favorite author in Bill. Even if you're not a nonfiction reader usually, please give this book and author a chance! You won't be dissapointed! For a bonus the audiobook is fabulous!

I had previously read A Walk in the Woods and was thoroughly impressed with Bryson's writing style and wit. Naturally, when I had the opportunity to buy a bunch of his books, I jumped at the opportunity. This was the first of the ones I bought that I decided to read.
And I laughed incredibly hard. It is a collection of newspaper columns he wrote back in the 90s, so it may seem a bit random at times, but I found in thoroughly enjoyable regardless. A few weren't so funny, but others had me laughing so hard my mom got mad at me. All in all, I greatly enjoyed it.

All the chapters are the same length, which is useful for the way I enjoyed this is 2024- as a readaloud with my adolescent son to give him a little tour of America in the late 90s, the America of my youth. Obviously many of the essays are quite dated now but they are SO dated as to be historical. They are also pretty hit or miss. Some are super funny, some are meh and some are unpleasantly bitter. On the whole, though, I would recommend it for that specific use case, or just for a person feeling a little nostalgic.

As an American ex-pat living in England as Bryson does (though not for 20+ years), I recognise a lot of the experiences and feelings he discusses here. I often think he lives inside my head, or at the very least hides in my office when I am regaling colleagues with fish-out-of-water type stories.
