I have despised every step taken on that journey to understanding, including this book. It is ugly and filled with imperialism and racism that the US pretends does not exist. I hate that the decade long war was fought to suppress people who wanted to be free of an empire. And the majority of the soldiers on the ground were from a nation that prides itself on the Revolutionary War - their own nation’s fight for freedom from an empire.
The war crimes documented in this book illuminate in part the horrors of a war in which the lives of the non-white were devalued and snuffed out in a orgiastic meat grinder. It also documents the suppression of information that illuminates why the war isn’t talked about nearly as much as other US wars.
Highly recommend.
