A little cheesy and predictable at times but so so so healing.
This book hugs my inner child and I’m grateful for its existence.
May the Room open to all those who need it.

Interesting premise but so long. It took 12 chapters to read the mystery.

Héctor’s new school isn’t as progressive as school last school in San Francisco. He is having a hard time finding his place, and having the schools biggest bully after him is making it worse. One day when trying to escape the bully he runs into the janitor’s closet but discovers it is so much more, it is a room that keeps him safe, gives him comforts and somehow new friends in different parts of the country.

A coming of age, finding one’s voice with a little bit of magic middle grade read

I liked the characters and it made me think a lot about bullying, and how to resolve it, including what adults can do. I hope this book helps some kids feel less alone.

read this as part of a storygraph genre challenge & found it on a buzzfeed recommendation list. i am obviously outside of the target audience, but WOW! what a book. there is so much love and empathy infused in héctor’s journey of navigating a new school, dealing with bullies, and finding where he belongs. so well done—if i had this book available to me as a preteen/teenager…! i could only imagine how impactful it would’ve been on my self-identity journey.

Hector is being targeted by a hateful, bigoted bully and his sidekicks. One day, they chase Hector and just when he thinks he is done for, he ducks into a closet to hide and finds himself in a magical room.
Hector eventually meets two other kids who are also in need of the room’s magic, and together, they begin to work to change things for the better.
Can I just say that I reaaaalllyyyy could have used a room like this as a kid? Actually I could still use a room like this now as an adult.
