I loved reading a chapter here and there. The chapters are short but packed with soul-filling words and practical advice for making decisions. I’d love to read this again and again and again to be reminded of how to take a soulful look at how to do the next right thing in love. What. A. Joy.

Emily Freeman's book The Next Right Thing is exactly the next right thing I needed to read! I have issues with decision-making.

Example: We were new in town. I was at the grocery store with my 14-month-old. I was trying to get my cart down the aisle but two women going in the opposite directions paused to chat about Saturday's soccer game. When I was finally able to approach the cereal section, I was so overwhelmed. Maybe it's just me, but there used to be only a handful of cereal options. On this particular day, they seemed to have stocked up on every option available on the planet. I had no idea what I wanted.

I'm generally a people-pleaser so I tend to overthink the choice that would make the most people happy. Then I mull over what would happen if it ends up being the wrong choice. So many people would be impacted. I'm thankful for Emily's gentle and guiding words to help me better understand how to make that next decision so that I can be at peace with the decision-making process and the choice no matter what the outcome. How can we prayerfully discern where God wants us to be in the big and small decisions? The Next Right Thing is the perfect resource to make things easier.

Love her writing. Love her podcast. This was just too much repetition of the podcast.

This book really is simple and soulful-- gentle, inviting, practical. It invites the reader into the process of decision making and demystifies that process. Freeman's writing is so beautiful and her podcast is also so good! The chapters are bite-sized and manageable. It also really transformed my view of God-- he's not out to get me, there's not a "wrong choice". This book is so encouraging and warm and you should read it whether you're deciding whether to move across the country or how to spend an empty day. Can't wait to come back to this one, to keep choosing the next right thing in love.

She called it minimalism for the soul. Obviously religious, so it’s not for everyone, but I really liked it.

This book is more than learning to make a decision in a better way. It teaches you how to live your life so the decision comes to you, slowly and easily. It shows you how walking at a slower pace allows you to breathe more deeply, see things more clearly, and feel things more truthfully. It doesn’t tell you what to do, but guides you. Definitely a resource book to read quickly or slowly over and over again as your life changes and grows. I’m so in love with this book!

A sweet, simple read. Nothing groundbreaking, but I enjoyed her stories and thoughtful approach to the subject of spiritual formation.

i was soothed + comforted by this book. i read it slowly, which isn’t always my thing — but it was a gift to pause in between. there were sentences that took my breath away and i know it’ll be a book i return to annually. thankful for the gift of beautiful words + practical exercises to work towards doing our next right thing. 💖

Chances are if you’ve interacted with me at all in the past months I’ve mentioned, quoted, or praised this book. In a nutshell, this book has lightened the load of what it means to make a decision - and the weight we often carry during and after that decision has been made. Author Emily Freeman gently leads you into contemplative postures and mindful practices and prayers without it becoming another burdensome task on the to-do list. I have been savoring this book. Slow and sweet. Meditating on specific ideas, prayers, practices for a week or more before moving onto the next small, palatable chapter. Freeman doesn’t present rocket-science ideas here, and she’s not pretending that she is. She is genuine and endearing, making the book not only helpful but also an enjoyable read. I can’t recommend this book enough!
