Quite beautiful descriptions, both indoor and outdoor. Made the setting feel cool and exciting to explore. Liked that Marlowe doesn't care about becoming wealthy. Also always liked the car chases.
Compassionate touch to not tell the General at the end was nice as well.

Meh. Every character was kind of a terrible person and all of it was a bit obvious. Probably won’t remember this book tomorrow.
It wasn't as confusing as its screen adaptation or maybe I regarded it differenly after having had watched the film. Nonetheless, the main thing is that I supremely enjoyed the tone of the book and I found the characters interesting. I definitely want to check out other novels from the series.

Not my kind of book. I only finished it because it was fairly short and I hoped it would get better. The narrator reminded me of those stereotypical voiceover Private Eye shows that are really over the top but where the detective himself has no emotion about anything, and spends time with a lot of people who make threats. He and the other characters talked in so much slang, sarcasm, and hints I didn't know what they were talking about a good part of the time. Add that together with lots of murders no one seems to care much about and a bunch of ridiculous female characters, and yeah, not my cup of tea.

A fun read, obviously an exemplar of the noir mystery genre. The lead detective is exactly what you’d expect: boozy, slick, keen, snarky, always eyeing women but never falling for them, gets away from (almost) every fight, etc. This makes it fun and quick to read but also comes with its downsides. There’s a lot of misogyny, with fair samplings of other types of (plot-bearing) prejudice throughout, which can be off-putting at times. The story is fun and clever, and would probably go good with an old fashioned and a cigar, but not sure I’d recommend it unless you already enjoy the mystery genre.
Graphic: Gun violence, Violence, Murder
Moderate: Homophobia, Misogyny, Sexual content, Alcohol
Minor: Ableism, Mental illness
It is completely impossible to stop reading once you start.

i just don't think that this is my type of book. i do want to give the sub-genre another try, but perhaps it would be better if it's another author's work
Read this a long time ago, but when I heard that Elliott Gould read Chandler’s Marlowe series, I had to come back to revisit. Absolutely fantastic in all its noir/thriller glory. So many detective tropes started with these books, and even parodied. Admittedly, I laughed through all the slapping because it just reminds me of Zucker bros. movies.
