I am unsure if I have ever experienced a book like this one, where with every new chapter a new information is dropped that almost always completely twists one of the many exciting narratives. From the first page on, I was surprised and as it kept going I could not fathom all the plottwists coming. And none of them seemed over the top nor misplaced, as the world, its history and its characters, whom I am attached to deeply now, are so well construed that it read so fluently.
Not to mention, the amazing and captivating writing style!
Due to the ending, I am both extremely curious and mortified to find out what is waiting in Book Three.

The Well of Ascension is the second book in Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn fantasy trilogy. What I find with this series is that it's just a slight bit style over substance. The characters are varied, I have a clear picture of them and more or less enjoy their presence. The world is interesting and unique; the lore is well thought out; and of course the magic system is fleshed out and intricately explained. However I find that as whole the story lacks a certain warmth. This isn't always a necessity in fantasy and sci-fi - sometimes the author just wants to write out their cool ideas, and there are many in Mistborn. But big plot points often don't carry a weight to them. Sometimes the plot itself is going through motions - and it is VERY apparent in one big subplot. One that I found to be SO contrived and led to situations where things could have worked out if the characters just talked to each other. So, still very novel for its time, but maybe not as enjoyable as the first. 7.5/10.

Devo ammettere che ho fatto fatica a iniziare questo secondo volume dopo la drammatica conclusione del precedente

che direbbi la morte di Kelsier mi ha sviscerato mi ci è voluto il dovuto tempo per processare il lutto

 
Mi è piaciuta l'incorporazione della tensione dell'aspetto politico della storia, conciliata all'adrenalina del campo di battaglia: chapeau di nuovo Sanderson, non ci si annoia mai con te.
La relazione fra Vin ed Elend ci ha messo un po' a farsi spazio nel mio cuore, ma più tardi mi sono resa conto che avevo a che fare con un rapporto di codipendenza intensa: che dire, all'immagine di questi poveri ragazzi aggrappati disperatamente l'uno all'altro come unica ancora di salvezza in un mondo che sta letteralmente crollando intorno a loro mi ha decisamente conquistato di più. Detto questo, non so perchè mi aspettassi qualcosa di sano da loro due: sono personaggi di natura opposta costretti a crescere in direzione opposta. Che bel melange.

La sua imprevedibilità sia al lettore che ai personaggi lo ha reso un antagonista intrigante e coinvolgente. 

Spero disperatamente nel suo ritorno, basandomi su delusioni personali quali la comunicazione diretta che aveva con The Ruin... signor The Ruin lo resusciti e gli faccia scatenare più caos por favor...solo per me....

 
KANDRA LORE KANDRA LORE KANDRA LORE e confido nel prossimo volume per saziare questa crescente fame di sapere, ma soprattutto mi aspetto più informazioni sugli inquisitori, SPECIALMENTE dopo l'ultimo capitolo con Marsh. Pover uomo. 

Perde il fratello per una causa originariamente sua e ora perde la testa per la stessa causa.

 
Ho adorato i capitoli dal punto di vista di Breeze, ma devo dire che la carenza di Dockson si è sentita. 

La sua morte ha avuto il suo dovuto impatto, ma sarebbe stata più struggente se la sua presenza nei fatti precedenti non fosse stata così effimera.

  Alla fine era facilmente incorporabile qualche input in più da responsabile amministrativo di una città allo sbaraglio, o semplicemente dal più stretto amico di Kelsier 

specialmente sulla nascita della Church of the Survivor

. Peccato, sarebbe stato molto interessante, soprattutto per l'importanza delle sua conversazione con Vin sulla sua permanente ostilità verso la nobiltà di Luthadel. 
Sazed, Sazed, Sazed... glorioso personaggio fin dal primo libro. Dopo le tragedie degli ultimi capitoli in questo volume, voglio proprio vedere come andrà avanti dopo l'impatto delle conseguenze delle sue azioni, oltre a quelle immediate visibili già in questo volume. 
Come sempre, una nota positiva sulle frasi di inizio capitolo che rendono l'esperienza di lettura molto più immersiva e coinvolgente: chiamatemi detective per le indagini fatte su quelle parole mistiche, signori.

Posso solo aggiungere che il terzo e ultimo volume è già sul comodino. Spero solo che la conclusione della trilogia sia all'altezza della storia costruita finora. Continua a deliziarmi, Sanderson. Conto su di te.

Edit 22/05: Dopo aver riletto il primo volume mi sono sentita in dovere di abbassare il voto, particolarmente per come si sono perse le relazioni di Vin con gli altri membri del gruppo. Comprendo che la sua relazione con Elend e la definizione di principi suoi sia il fulcro di questo volume, ma non è detto che debbano essere esclusivi. Che il lutto per Kelsier abbia avuto il suo peso sulle relazioni varie, capisco, ma ridurre significativamente il rapporto di Vin con Dox, Ham e Breeze mi ha lasciato un po' perplessa, soprattutto quando i primi capitoli sono partiti così bene nel mantenere il legame fra loro.

 <spoiler >I am going to finish this entire series but I am SO FRUSTRATED by these characters and their actions. This whole book felt USELESS. Nobody in the kingdom was saved, people were still slaughtered, and the "hero" was just a murderer at the end. The themes of racisms are infuriating,   and the poor in the moment decisions had me taking my hair out. Not to mention Vin, for all her paranoia, fell for every single fucking trick that was thrown at her. What was the point there, showing that trust was useless? She didn't trust a single person that had been there for her, and chose the weird stranger that looked like her boyfriend. Tindwyl was done absolutely dirty in the book, along with some of the other major players from book one. It wasn't that they died, it was that they had a POINTLESS death. Again, I am so frustrated. Because I love the world, the characters, and the lore., and I WILL finish this series. But I don't like Vin and I don't like the decisions.

I think if I would have had this book on hand, as soon as I finished Mistborn, I would have immediately dove in. When I was finally able to order, and receive, this book I think it took me a bit to pick it up because I was worried. If you’ve ever read fantasy series before…sometimes as the series continues the books continue to be brutal on your emotions. However I was determined to read this book this month, so I set out a goal and within roughly 12 days I completed it.

We pick up roughly a year after Kelsier and the Lord Ruler were murdered. The young nobleman Vin fell for, in Mistborn, is now the King of Luchador. Between King Elend, the crew, and Vin they’re desperately trying to ensure their kingdom’s future. As if running a [recently liberated] kingdom isn’t hard enough they’re also faced with multiple armies outside their gates. Armies that are eager to take them over and reinstate so many of the Lord Ruler’s laws just with a new figurehead in place.

This book was a lot of fun because I feel like, media-wise, we’re used to seeing things liberated or conquered but rarely see the after-effects or what it takes to move on. I mean think about how many things we watch and read that have a mission to overcome and then it’s over and…we’re left thinking everything continued on perfectly? Nah, the struggle is real.

We jump between roughly ten different POVs throughout the book, of course, Vin is the primary narrative we see. It’s interesting seeing how Sanderson will sometimes have a POV added that literally get’s part of a chapter and then we never see them again, or we don’t see them until the next book. Really kept me on my toes thinking…will this person be important?

The majority of this book felt slower-paced, although enemies are numerous and things are happening, it felt like we have a steady pace until about 2/3 of the way through, and then we hit warp speed. Roughly the last 200 pages had a chokehold on me and I couldn’t stop until I knew what was going to happen.

I now have so many more questions and look forward to starting the final book, in the trilogy, very soon!
