DID NOT FINISH

The first Baldacci book I've ever not finished. Seemed too wordy, too long to get anywhere

Total Control is one book with too many stories. While it’s not difficult to follow, it seems completely preposterous that all of these stories would even occur to begin with...much less be linked.

The main character is Sidney Archer. She’s beautiful, intelligent, a successful attorney and mother. Her husband makes some poor choices with bad people and she ends up in big trouble. Despite her great intelligence, she repeatedly makes very poor decisions landing herself in more and more trouble. Don’t worry though! She can handle a gun, outwit the bad guys just in time, fight off the bad guys too (again just in time!), and the bad guys will also let her go free sometimes. There’s also a plane crash, several murders, and a lot of bad dudes. Note: if you suspect someone is a bad dude, he is.

I had a hard time keeping up with the characters. I had to go back a couple times to remind myself who someone was. Also, the book went on far too long and was poorly edited.

As an aside, reading this book so many years after its original publication made the story much less intense. The references to floppy disks and America Online were funny to see.

Not good. Massive plot holes, really drawn out.

It was fun reading a book written 20 years ago and seeing how much has changed since then.

Quite entertaining book. Very hard to put down once you start reading.

90's tech thriller. Strong female lead. Action packed.

Themes: plane crash investigation, armed and dangerous intelligent female

Story: Jason Archer lives in a nice house in suburban Washington DC with his lovely wife and their young daughter. When Jason disappears and trouble starts turning up left and right, it's up to wife Sidney to take charge in order to track down answers.

Language: Published in the 90's, this book contains a plethora of outdated technology and terminology, making it less suspenseful as it might have been back in the day. It's overly long at 600+ pages and the amount of characters and twists and turns make the reveal at the end more of a puzzle to try to remember previous characters and chapters than an ideal A-ha moment.

Characters: Jason is a hard working computer savvy guy, trying to pay off debts and idealized by his wife. Sidney is beautiful and a lawyer and... well, they are all rather one dimensional.

Shoddy writing and a lackluster ending didn't win me over.
dark mysterious

At this point I'm not sure how many Baldacci novels I've slogged through (no GoodReads I'm NOT over the "Most Read Authors" feature being removed) but I think at this point it's safe to say he just really isn't for me. This was ok I guess but if I had not listened to the audiobook there is no way I'd have made it through. I will say I always learn an alarming amount about technology and other random stuff when reading his books because he goes into SO much detail when explaining things like that... which is probably also where I get a little distracted and lost because I don't care that much about those things.

I will keep trudging through the Amos Decker Series though because I did rather like the first book and I'm hoping I can at least see where that guy ends up.
