I read it with her voice in my head obviously. And even though the references are pretty old and I did have to Google some stuff. It was still worth the read.

Laughed out loud a lot in the beginning and then it slowed down.
Loved her show ideas...my favorite was "The Weekly Hangover."
I also loved her quote in the beginning about disagreeing with traditional advice. "For instance, they say the best revenge is living well. I say it's acid in the face-who will love them now? Another old saying is that revenge is a dish best served cold. But it feels best served piping hot, straight out of the oven of outrage."

I initially read this book when it first came out, and really liked it. After listening to the audiobook in 2025, I still think Mindy Kaling is funny, but there are a LOT of problematic jokes in this book. It definitely didn’t age well
3.5 stars. I really enjoy Mindy Kaling's humor, but this book is so short. I didn't feel like there she ever really went into depth about her background or life, it remained pretty surfacey. I still really liked it and it's a very quick audiobook (4 hours).
Mindy is hilarious and I love some of her writing. But honestly, I am just not that interested in either fashion or celebrities, so much of this I found rather boring (but most people would probably like). Also, in the fake memorial part at the end they said she was a republican. This can't possibly be true, right?
This was overall a cute and entertaining read, and I could definitely see myself sharing some hang time with Mindy. After reading this and Tina Fey's Bossypants however, I have learned that ladies of comedy/hollywood seem to obsess about their bodies and whether or not they are "fat" a little too much. I realize that they are a product of the world they inhabit, but it would be nice if they would fight against it a little bit. A woman can still be funny, but it seems people have to consider her attractive as well. Aside from that I enjoyed this book, and having already been bothered by the same issues in Bossypants I may have given that issue more "WEIGHT" in my mind than it deserved. I still like you, Mindy!

I probably would have enjoyed this more closer to when it was actually written, but I did like the insightful, funny narrative.
