Love her show, and found some of the same witty insights here, but not a lot of laugh-out-loud moments. I'd give it a 3 1/2 rating if I could, as it was like hanging out with a sassy friend.
I chalk up the use of the "lesbians have no style" trope to the fact that she just doesn't know enough femmes.
That said the REST of the book is delightful! Hilarious, well written, insightful & endearing. I want to be her best friend, be her and date her all at the same time.

:-) One of my favorite book-related things to do is to listen to books (especially memoirs) read by the author while I am driving or exercising. Examples: Angela's Ashes read by author Frank McCourt; The Measure of a Man read by author Sidney Poitier; Lucky Man read by author Michael J Fox.
A sub-category = books written and read aloud by comedians ... Bossypants read by author Tina Fey; Seriously I'm Kidding read by author Ellen Degeneres; Never have your dog stuffed read by author Alan Alda.
Now, Mindy Kaling's book gets added to this category. It took me a little while to get into the book but by about a third of the way through, I loved it. My only real critique is the title - it sounds far more neurotic than the book and I initially had no desire to read the book because of the title. I look forward to the book Mindy writes in 20 years - she has plenty to say but her career is only just beginning. Looking forward to the sequel!

slow-paced
One of the worst books I've read in a while. It started out OK with stories about Mindy's childhood and work. That part was fine, although not particularly funny. Once she finished telling us about working on The Office she ran out of things to say and the book devolved into her random, unfunny, sometimes sightly offensive musings. Her story about the woman who ran the cupcake store offering her free cupcakes if she would tweet about how much she liked them turned into a rant about how she had plenty of money to buy $2 cupcakes and it was insulting that the woman would even notice she was in there frequently. Her description of how men should dress included telling men that they should buy new Chuck Taylors every year because they are "only $40 and if you can't afford them you have bigger problems and shouldn't be reading this book." Wow Mindy.
This book reads exactly how you think Mindy Kaling would sound. Despite it being primarily a collection of random anecdotes with little connection to one another or flow per say, this was still an enjoyable and easy read.
I have read several books by comedians, and, usually, I am disappointed with them. I read such books expecting to have a good laugh, and I am usually let down in the end.Still, I decided to borrow this book from the library.
I have seen a couple of episodes of The Office and the pilot of The Mindy Project. That is pretty much the extent of my knowledge of Kaling. From those experiences, I was not sure if I thought she was more weird than funny or vice versa. Reading this book convinced me that she is actually pretty funny. I actually enjoyed this book. There were a lot of laugh out loud moments for me. I actually read it twice, which I never do.
In this book, Mindy tells stories of her family, childhood, and road to stardom. Her stories were very down to earth, relatable and entertaining, and readers can learn a lot about her from the book.
The only thing that was a little odd to me a little about this book was her obsession with image, particularly her weight and dieting. I have never viewed her as a big person at all, so it was surprising to me that she struggles with her image in that way. Then again, look at the society in which we live…
This is definitely one of the better books that I have read by a comedienne. I recommend this to people who want a good laugh in a light, quick, easy read.

I had so much fun reading this! We all know Mindy Kaling is a very funny gal & boy did this memoir just nail that in! She goes from hilarious anecdotes and jokes, to serious topics & back like it’s nothing and it was just so entertaining! It was all over the place & I wouldn’t say it hit me hard in the feels like other memoirs, but it made me laugh & I loved getting the insights she shared! & the Blackberry photos were ICONIC to include! I will definitely be reading her other memoirs!!
This would’ve been a bit higher rated but there were a few things in this memoir (some jokes and words she used) that definitely did not age well!! I know it was released in 2011, but still, it just rubbed me the wrong way and I couldn’t give it any higher of a rating!
