I had so much fun reading this! We all know Mindy Kaling is a very funny gal & boy did this memoir just nail that in! She goes from hilarious anecdotes and jokes, to serious topics & back like it’s nothing and it was just so entertaining! It was all over the place & I wouldn’t say it hit me hard in the feels like other memoirs, but it made me laugh & I loved getting the insights she shared! & the Blackberry photos were ICONIC to include! I will definitely be reading her other memoirs!!
This would’ve been a bit higher rated but there were a few things in this memoir (some jokes and words she used) that definitely did not age well!! I know it was released in 2011, but still, it just rubbed me the wrong way and I couldn’t give it any higher of a rating!

Mindy, Mindy, Mindy. This book is just what I needed at a time when I needed it the most. It had me laughing and turning pages so fast, I was afraid I would start a fire. I love your down-to-earth realism and your world view. One of my favorite parts was about married couples. It did remind me of my own marriage (in a good way, whew!) And, I also loved the part about which romantic comedy heroines do not really exist. I loved that part because I know of at least one person in real life who seems to think she is actually the ethereal weirdo. I knew she wasn't. Thanks for the validation!!

I first knew of Mindy Kaling when I started watching The Office . I immediately loved her character: the superficial, vain, and kind of stereotypically arrogant airhead. Her character was a side character, and yet I always enjoyed every time she appeared on screen. Later on I found out Mindy was actually a writer on the show. Then, I got to see more of Mindy’s work in her brand new show The Mindy Project, which she stars in, directs, and writes for. Needless to say, it’s an amazing show and you should get on it if you haven’t.
I’ve read other celebrity non-fiction comedy books before (Bossypants by Tina Fey and Seriously… I’m Kidding by Ellen Degeneres) so I was already accustomed to the sometimes non-linear way to tell a story. What I wasn’t ready for was the immediate submersion into comedy, and my laughing out loud so quickly into the story.
Mindy Kaling’s audiobook narration is spot on (because duh, it’s her book) and I was so captivated by her voice. I felt like we were sitting in a coffee shop together and she was actually talking to me about her life. Her voice would totally bring you into a story about her childhood, and then totally shock you or make you laugh uncontrollably at something that had happened.
Mindy has lots of incredible essays throughout her entire book. She talks about body positivity and image, typical stereotypes in most romantic comedies (which is really one of my favorite essays, and I’ve read it more than once), dating in this modern time, and she also gives us lots of stories about her family and childhood.
She’s definitely a very down-to-earth celebrity if I’m going to be basing myself on her book. I loved hearing all her awkward stories, just as much as I loved listening to her successes in comedy. She never came off as snobby (in fact, more than once she turns self-deprecating), and I really enjoyed learning more about her.
The only downside to the audiobook is that there’s a whole chapter dedicated to photographs, so once I finished the audio I immediately had to borrow the physical copy to look at the pictures.
Overall, this is a hilarious book that I thought I would not like. I am really pleased with Mindy Kaling’s narration and writing, and will definitely have to try her second book. If you already loved Mindy, you’ll love her even more, and if you didn’t know who she was, you’ll also love her (because duh, she’s amazing).
Favorite quotes:
“There is no sunrise so beautiful that it is worth waking me up to see it.”
“Teenage girls, please don’t worry about being super popular in high school, or being the best actress in high school, or the best athlete. Not only do people not care about any of that the second you graduate, but when you get older, if you reference your successes in high school too much, it actually makes you look kind of pitiful, like some babbling old Tennessee Williams character with nothing else going on in her current life. What I’ve noticed is that almost no one who was a big star in high school is also big star later in life. For us overlooked kids, it’s so wonderfully fair.”
“All women love Colin Firth: Mr. Darcy, Mark Darcy, George VI—at this point he could play the Craigslist Killer and people would be like, 'Oh my God, the Craigslist Killer has the most boyish smile!”
“If someone called me chubby, it would no longer be something that kept me up late at night. Being called fat is not like being called stupid or unfunny, which is the worst thing you could ever say to me."

"There are many teenage vampire books you could have purchased instead. I'm grateful you made this choice.”

I enjoyed this one very much! I've become a big Mindy Kaling fan ever since her show, "The Mindy Project," came out a few years ago and quickly became a favorite. Just like on the show, Mindy has proven herself to be witty, quick, and honest in her first memoir. Her tone is casual and friendly, making me wish we were real life friends. Though some essays were funnier than others, I really liked this book as a whole and look forward to reading her next memoir. I enjoyed getting to know more about her life and career and hope to learn even more with the next one!
The literary equivalent of reading funny notes from your high school bff. Light goodhearted entertainment. The part about dieting as a hobby cracked me up - hilarious, and true. Mostly I grew to really like Mindy Kaling through the course of reading this memoir and I learned a little bit about tv writing. My only beef is towards the end I started to get exhausted with her description of herself as chubby and her stories about weight loss struggles. Girl, you are an admitted size 8, yes that is bigger than the size zero actresses that populate LA, but I don't consider that to be particularly chubby.
FINALLY DONE WITH THIS.
Okay, Mindy Kaling is cool. But I am not familiar with her work at all. So this was my first experience with her work. She was funny. But this book wasn't exactly my cup of comedy tea (because I'm an atrocious person). That being said, it was okay. But I didn't want to rate her at two stars because she deserves better than that, because she is funny. Just not my funny, and I had no previous relations with her. But I do find myself more inclined to watch her shows and whatnot. So that came out of this.

Self-centered, naive, judgemental, and lacking a funny bone. I was looking forward to this book but I won't be picking up any more.
Ok let's face it. It was annoying whenever Mindy was like "it's sexist BUT... [insert some sort of justification here]".
I always feel terribly annoyed at her when she does that, but then I get even more annoyed at myself because I enjoy the humour in these remarks.
This is the perfect book to read on a summer day in one sitting by the pool. Honestly, this book made my day.
