Quite difficult to read, hence why it took me almost 2 months to read it. It was quite all over the place and I wasn't completely certain when a subplot would end and the next began which annoyed me because suddenly it wasn't a part of the book anymore. To me it just felt lazy and hastily written, as if to get fans of the show interested in the new series of books. Will read the others just because I didn't absolutely hate this book, but giving myself some time to read more notable books with some substance.

Definitley not what I expected!

I actually really liked this book. The romance is tense and exciting and the plot is vastly different from the first four in the series. I enjoyed the switch but because there are random occurrences and stuff sometimes happens without much explanation, I have I bring my rating down to a three star. Overall I still really enjoyed this book and had a hard time setting it down.

I didn't have as near of a long wait between this book and the previous ones as my friend did, so the whole storyline was really bang bang bang one right after the other for me.

What I like about this book was that you can really see the difference between it and the originals of the series. I don't even think it really should be considered young adult anymore. Not with the level of violence and the description of said violence.

That said, I felt it was an excellent book. Elena is almost too perfect, though, but I suppose I can forgive it as well since she was/is an angel.

I'm excited to see what is in store for Damon, Matt and Elena now. I'm worried that we won't see much more of Bonnie and Merideth, what with the way the book ended.

And I'm not sure if I'm rooting for Bonnie and Damon or Bonnie and Matt at this point.

1.5 Stars. It was ok. But I didn't really enjoy it when I read it (a loooong time ago), took me forever to finish it and it irritated me a lot.

Ahhh a little bit more horror than I remember. These have been a good comfort read in a stressful time but definitely not as I remember…

Couldn't finish this book. It became really boring and repetitive so I had to set it down.

The good thing about this book is that it was all action. No navel-gazing, will-they-won't-they nonsense, just a lot of stuff happening. None of the stuff made sense and it was very silly but you have to commend the book for being pro-active. If I tried to explain the plotline now my head would probably explode. I'll give it a go anyway. At the end of the last Vampire Diaries book Elena comes back from the dead. Dunno why. In this book she's back and she can fly. There are these two evil foxes. They are influencing people. But the trees are also evil. Elena has multiple wings. And it's just dreadful. When the fourth book in this series was released I thought, "Why?" and it wasn't great but it was short and readable. The Vampire Diaries colon The Return colon Nightfall is neither short nor readable. There are hints in places of that old L.J. Smith fun and creepiness but it's not worth wading through 500 pages of boring, embarrassing rubbish to get to them. I don't know if I'll bother with the next one; it's longer than this by about a hundred pages and (I hear) it involves Bonnie and Meredith being led into the underworld on leashes.

Please don't continue reading this review if you are an ardent fan of this particular piece of "literature".

That being said: Reading this book was just plain painful. I quite like the TV series, thought I'd give the books a shot since usually I found books series are based on better than the series...

Well could I have been more wrong? The first four books were kind of okay, even though I prefer the plot in the TV series. But this book? Terrible. It reads like some really really bad fanfiction written by someone who jumped on the "I like Japan" train and wanted to kind of combine their two most favorite things. If you like vampire novels I recommend the earlier Charlain Harris True Blood books or good ole' Anne Rice for that matter.
