So confused about this book. It was way to long not sure why it was dragged on so much there where so many unnecessary plot lines that it just got confusing and nothing made sense. I'm happy Damon was a central character but also why was Stefan in like 2% of the book. Also wtf was the ending I swear to god if Elena is getting feelings for Matt I'm going to loose the will to live.

Hypnotizing. Dark. Lovely.
Elena has come back, but she isn't herself. She can't write, talk, or even walk. She can fly though.
No longer human, there is another problem in Fell's Church. Girls have been acting misteriously... And Stefan has disappeared.
But Damon's there! And Damon, darker than ever, seems to have changed- at least in Elena's eyes. But can she leave Stefan behind?

This book was so bad. Elena is annoying, Caroline has seriously lost it and Damon is all over the place. I have always had a soft spot for Damon so you would think a book that focuses rather a lot on him would be a favourite, that would be wrong. ||I understand his actions were all over the place because of the possession but still none of it felt right, neither the good or the bad||. The entire book just felt tacky. One good thing I can say is that Bonnie is developing into the strong stubborn character she will eventually grow into.
Side note, this entire series so far could simply be renamed "poor Matt", I mean I know everyone in this book gets so much misfortune thrown at them its hard to see but everyone else gets some happy moments atleast, Matt on the other hand gets nothing.
I am really hoping these books get bettervas this one was hard to read.
dark mysterious tense

“I’m Elena Gilbert and I’ve been to the Other Side. And right now I’m ready to do whatever needs to be done, which seems to include kicking some ass!” –Best line of the whole series.

The beginning of The Return: Nightfall was a bit confusing and slow with Elena’s ‘rebirth’ and whatnot. It took me time to get invested in the story, and then later, I felt it was going on too long. It seemed breathy at the end, like it just had to be wrapped up somehow. There were a lot of threads going, a lot of going back and forth between characters, etc., and I couldn’t keep track of every storyline, but maybe that was just my problem. Plus, every time I read the name Isobel, I thought Elena’s mom! instead of Possessed-minor-character!

My favorite aspect was getting a deeper look at Damon, glimpsing the events from his point of view after four books of only speculation to his thoughts and true involvement. His character is layered and witty, and more of that ‘classical’ style of vampire in line with Anne Rice’s creations, than Stefan. I have to admit, though, I’m still more taken with the Damon on the show. The same goes for the Damon/Elena relationship. So much of the progress made between them in this book was an illusion, which is frustrating.

I think, overall, I preferred the first four books, the original trilogy in particular. I realize a substantial amount of time passed in between when the author wrote those and when she picked up the series again, so that could account for some of the inconsistencies in, say, Elena’s character. Hopefully, the next volume, which from the ‘epilogue,’ promises plenty of fan fiction-worthy goodness, will be more focused on the trio of Damon, Elena, and Stefan.

I might just re-read this book, so I can give it a review.

This book was really weird. I advice everyone to just stick with the first two books (The Awakening & The Struggle and Fury & Dark Reunion) and not to read this one. L.J. Smith should have never written it.
