Considering the great characters and world the author was given to play with, I was disappointed by this book. One of the biggest issues was that I just found this confusing. It was a high school AU, set in modern times, but the bigger world was poorly set-up. We know that Clark is going to become Superman, but no one else has ever encountered anything unusual? The government is looking into investing in mind control, but most people don't even believe it exists. The main character has violet eyes and is aware that it's weird, but that comic book trait is given no explanation in the book.

Lois is a really promising character, and I enjoyed her family, friends, and Perry, but it could have been so much better if it had been cohesive enough to really world-build.

With a plot so predictable that nothing in this book came as a surprise this is the kind of book that leaves me annoyed with the characters for not seeing what's been set out before then. I'm constantly thinking "how can they not notice?".
Somewhat frustrating, but it was also a super fun, wizzy book with an excellent strong female lead (yay), though she did do a little bit of that annoying "oh, I needs my Superman" bollocks.
Very readable escapism, just don't expect to learn anything new.

Set in Metropolis and narrated by a teenage Lois Lane, Bond maintains the classic DC comic heroine

So friggin’ fantastic! Just . . . Exceptional.

INTRIGUING

This was so good. I was right there with Lois, feeling the rush of a developing story and a thrill for the truth. So excited to read the next book.

A friend of mine mentioned these books, so I wanted to give them a try. I'm more familiar with Lois Lane as she's depicted in Smallville, the 90s animated series and the DCEU movies. But I've always liked her character: how she's feisty, never met a story she wasn't willing to go above and beyond to pursue, her strength and intellect, her no-nonsense attitude and so on.

So for me, this book was really fun. It felt like it could've been an episode of Smallville, especially considering the setting of a school. I liked Lois, of course, and the secondary characters were interesting enough that I'd read more in hopes that they're fleshed out more. I would've also loved more from Lois's home life, like her relationship with her parents and Lucy. But this book felt like an introduction to Lois's personality for those who might be unfamiliar, so I'll just hope there's more from secondary characters in future books.

I think my biggest issue with this book is how Clark was handled. While I liked their relationship, it didn't seem to make a lot of sense how he would go to such great lengths to hide his identity but then make his online avatar look so similar to his real life face. Friendly alien with laser vision? Good grief, man. Also, he had to be the most suspiciously mysterious person on the planet with how it was "too dangerous" to reveal himself to her. Or how many times he repeated he wished he could help her but couldn't. I swear he wanted to blow his secret with how obvious he was being.

The hive mind plot was pretty cool and I liked the Ender's Game vibe going on. Like I said, it felt very much like the plot of an episode from Smallville. Sometimes it did feel like certain things were a little too contrived, like how Perry White just happened to be in the principle's office and randomly offered Lois a job in two seconds.

But I had fun and enjoyed it. Hopefully the rest of the series is just as fun.

I liked it... though some of the things verge on outrageous but still highly enjoyable.
