A cozy slice of life that shows all the ways we are connected to each other and how kindness and community intertwine in our lives. A real palate cleanser of a book.

This novel read like an advert for a fictional convenience store. Thankfully, Tenderness is not real, (and there doesn’t seem to be an equivalent in Kyushu to my knowledge) otherwise I would’ve rated this book even lower. I could easily see this novel being adapted into a miniseries.
I wonder what the surrounding cafes and small grocery stores think of Tenderness…
Shoutout to Mr. Ōtsuka, who didn’t realize that convenience stores could be so…. convenient.

It just couldn’t capture my attention right now.

I really liked this book, it was a quick and easy read. Many short stories next to each other, all in the universe of a Japanese Combini. The book managed to be different to similar Japanese novels that intend a Life-is-good/Be-more-mindful vibe. It kept me entertained. The story of Kosei and Kozeki I liked the most, it has some BL vibes but does not completely go through with it but rather leaves the ending open. That is ok, but I would have liked a clear BL ending, that would have been courageous.

“It’s unexpectedly difficult to keep doing what you love, […] Look around you. Those who care enough to risk anything real for what they love are actually surprisingly few.”
I really liked this for the most part. It was more so like a slice of life, just having a little peek at the lives of the various people in this town. A handful of the stories were really touching to me personally and did get me a bit misty-eyed. This isn’t typically my type of story-telling. I prefer to have a main plot and goal that the characters can focus on achieving throughout the story, but despite this book not following that format I really really enjoyed it. It really felt like I was a fly on the wall following someone around for a bit then moving on to the next person to see what kind of life lesson they learn and so on, if that makes sense.
