I didn't read this as a child - don't even remember picking it up - and I found it dull and dated as an adult. I think if you're a Narnia fan you'll enjoy the style, but I'm not, and didn't. I don't think it'll appeal to most modern kids at all - it is 50 years old, of course.

It's a wonderful concept, but the writing style left me quite confused

Like a Diana Wynne Jones book, but creepier and not as smoothly written. Tries some very difficult things and succeeds. Bravely allows reader to be confused. Recommended.

This is a book I read as a kid and found unnerving. Because of this it is a novel that stayed with me throughout my teenage years and I eventually reread it as a 20 year old. It can take a couple of reads to understand what is happening but I do recommend it.

I quite enjoyed this one. It was very atmospheric but I'm not sure I really understood what was going on!
