Ben is out of town for business, and decides to take a hike in the woods near his hotel. From there, things start to get really weird, as he stumbles across some terrifying men wearing the skins of dogs on their heads. Ben runs away, and eventually realizes that he is no longer in the same world. He begins to follow a path, meeting up with plenty of other monsters, and one snarky crab. Ben just wants to get home, and will do anything he has to do in order to make that happen.

I didn't read much about this title before diving in, and I misunderstood the premise. I expected Ben to go on a hike, and end up in maybe an alternate reality, populated with people he already knows and other familiar things, kind of like [b: All Of Our Wrong Todays|27405006|All Our Wrong Todays|Elan Mastai|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1465316482s/27405006.jpg|47452430]. So when this started to get whacked, I was thrown...but in a good way. The author sucked me in, and I truly cared what happened to Ben.

I was especially curious to see how he would wrap things up, and I gotta say, I didn't see that ending coming. Good book!

I really enjoyed this book. The whole time I was thinking, "How are they gonna end this?... How are they going to tie things up?..." and the closer it got to the end, the more I was preparing myself to be let down, but I have to say, I think he pulled it off. The ending was both satisfying and made sense. Too many books I've enjoyed until the end where it either ends on a cliff hanger with no intention of the story continuing, is rushed and/or confusing, or ones that are just plain awful. This wasn't any of those, and just made the book, in its entirety, that much better.

This book seems really interesting, but was too graphic and creepy for me in the end, so I put it down. I was intrigued but ovewhelmed. It had more of a horror vibe than I expected. Might eventually revisit it!

This quick read provided a much-needed distraction to ward off some post-election blues before getting back to more serious stuff. It was funny and dark and I appreciated the tongue-in-cheek attempt at video-game style storytelling, but in the end the narrative failed to say anything worthwhile about video games or hikes or any sort of journey. Reading felt too much like flipping through disparate television channels, jumping too quickly between stream-of-consciousness thoughts, a la Tom Robbins but without the plot development that he would weave to bring his thoughts to order, and while this quirky randomness kept me guessing throughout the hike, the ending turned out to be a little bit of a let down.

⭐️ This book is definitely not for everyone. I very much enjoyed it...even if I was not entirely sure what I was reading at times

An Alice-in-Wonderlandesque allegorical delight! This book’s creative twists blend past, present, and future and all of the lessons we can learn from our past, present, and future selves.
