Like if Hitchhiker and The Oddysey got together and wrote a book. I've been on a nonfiction tear and this is exactly what I needed.

The long journey home, full of dangerous obstacles, of The Odessey meets the humor of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.  Ben thinks he is just taking a hike at his hotel before a work meeting, but instead he is transported to an alternate reality where he is forced to follow The Path wherever it leads him in his quest to return to his family.

Ben faces
murderous men wearing Rottweiler faces, a six-foot tall cave cricket, a hovercraft sinking into the ocean after colliding with an iceberg, a cannibal giant who forces her prisoners to face off in fighting matches to the death, and a slew of other mythical monsters: Smokes, the Skinless, Mouth Demons, Voris.
Ben also meets
a talking blue crab, whom he eventually learns is his future self.
Ben keeps having dreams about his past
that are more than dreams; he wakes up with physical evidence--his late father's ring, a bottle of Peach Schnapps. These dreams rewrite what happened to him, correcting the ways that things went awry.

The novel is bizarre, a little philosophical, and occasionally touching.

I really enjoyed the ending.

A surreal, emotional, magical, vast and fantastical odyssey (that also serves a hilarious piece of psychological horror) into the mind of man and his psyche. You learn everything about Ben and his family and what made him the man he is today. Every page had me hooked on Ben’s journey and by the time you finish it you feel apart of Ben, you’ve lived a whole life with him.

Every character beamed with unique quirks and qualities and although some parts of the book were predictable in the best way possible, other parts were not.

One of the best books I’ve ever read and will still with me for a long time to come.
