Such a cool premise. I loved the beginning of this but (and I think this is my American-ness showing) I just have a hard time feeling satisfied when the solution to the mystery hinges on learning who is related to who. That doesn’t feel like “solving” anything to me.

I’m a sucker for a good mystery. Add in elements of 19th century Korea and I’m happy. The plot was nothing revolutionary, but the writing was good and the atmosphere was well done! Some of the plot points were easily guessed, but it didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment of the story. If you want a quick-read mystery with a cool historical twist, this is a good read for you!
i’m not saying the book was bad, because really, it wasn’t, its just that i didn’t actually care enough to finish it. it came to the point that i was like draggginggggg myself to pick up the book so i decided to dnf at page 100-something

I was super enthusiastic at the introduction citation "I have a mouth, but I mustn't speak; Ears, but I mustn't hear; Eyes, but I mustn't see" and the historical context but sadly [b:The Silence of Bones|44280973|The Silence of Bones|June Hur|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1560840626l/44280973._SY75_.jpg|64680812] didn’t match this feeling.
The exploration of the atmosphere, the historical context, the characters, the plot and intrigue was not deep enough. Fascinated by Korean culture this book left me hungry for more. With [b:The Silence of Bones|44280973|The Silence of Bones|June Hur|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1560840626l/44280973._SY75_.jpg|64680812] I didn’t really travel to the 1800’s Joseon. The first pages left aside I found the Korean historical context quite (for me too) light. I would have loved to learn more about this historical period but the references to it were not present enough.
Then the mystery wasn’t so much of a mystery. There are basically two mysteries in the story: her brother's and the murderer's identities. The first one was obvious from the start and while the second was a little more difficult to get, it was still quite simple. Until the last page I waited for a twist but there were none. And while the characters weren’t bad they weren’t memorable either. However, one thing that I found interesting was the relationship between Seol and inspector Han.
In the end, [b:The Silence of Bones|44280973|The Silence of Bones|June Hur|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1560840626l/44280973._SY75_.jpg|64680812] didn’t leave me an strong impression. However, I think that people who don’t know much of the Korean culture and history would have a different experience with this book.
