Today is all about The Silence of Bones, by debut author June Hur. It's a YA historical in 1800s Korea about an indentured teen helping solve a murder mystery. How cool?!? How unique?!?

I received an ARC paperback of this book from a wonderful bookish friend who knew this was one of my most anticipated reads of 2020. There's a special place in my heart for Korean culture and history and language, so I'm always excited to see more of it in the YA market, especially in the historical (sageuk) subgenre!
The Silence of Bones is a Korean historical murder mystery that will absolutely leave you guessing until the end. The protagonist, Seol, and her curiosity paint the world over with suspicion throughout the case, making you guess and second guess and even third guess who is the culprit.
Admittedly, due to Seol's circumstances and personality in the time she lives in, she doesn't have many close relationships of any kind in the beginning of the narrative, which did give me some difficult in connecting to her. Seol is, however, fiercely loyal to what and who she thinks is deserving of her loyalty, and that plays a significant role in the narrative, especially the second half where things really pick up and gain speed. I couldn't race through the climax fast enough!
Overall, The Silence of Bones is a solid debut from a new voice in traditional YA publishing and I'm eager to see where June Hur goes from here!

Feels like a Historical K Drama. I have no words yet HAHAHAH. The Silence of Bones is a nuanced novel steeped in Korean history on religion and the pervading theme of "han" which as far as I know is a distinct theme of Korean films. Vengeance films are in fact critically acclaimed in Korea like The Host, Burning, and Old Boy! Also, it's just been too long since I've immersed myself in a book huhuhuhu looking forward for June Hur's next book!!!! (Also this book cover is just amazing!)

easily the best book I read this year. I couldn't put it down. And when I wasn't reading it, I was thinking about reading it. An amazing mystery and loveable protagonist. I also learned a lot about Korean history. If you like historical fiction and mystery, you will love this book.
