It wasn't bad, as a matter of fact, there were plenty of positives about this book. Where it fell short for me was in the characters. They were pretty flat and I didn't get attached or form any kind of opinions on them. The book could have ended with "yeah and then everyone died..." and I would have closed the book and said "ok" and moved on.

really really enjoyed this! The atmosphere and the historical setting were truly top notch!

"Grain of Salt" rating, so upping to 3.5. It's been awhile since I've not been able to focus on an audio so badly (proud of myself since I had quite the streak of those earlier in the year). The setting and atmosphere of his historical novel were fantastic and I could feel that throughout. The history was also well done. But I did not follow the plot/mystery as well, and again, probably my fault for doing it on audio and not paying attention. I might read something else by her though, because setting is my main "doorway" to reading and ooh boy this was evocative.

This is the third book I've read from June Hur ( I think this is her first book) and not really my favorite. It was well written however I didn't find it to be memorable. A little slow paced but not enough for me to lose interest. You can see her writing develop when you get to her recent book, more details are added and really takes you for a ride. Happy Reading :)

Great storytelling

I really enjoyed this book. I found the character likable and the story engaging. I was hooked from the first chapter. I am looking forward to reading more by this author.

I really enjoyed this murder mystery set in 1800 Korea. It kept me guessing on the identity of the killer.

Seol was such an intelligent character to follow the perspective of. The writing was also good. I listened to it on audio and the narrator did a great job, especially with the Korean vocabulary.

It was a pleasant experience. I would like to read more books like this from the author.

Read for Asian Readathon 2023 ^_^

I can't tell, but I think June Hur might just not be for me. Or maybe it's just mystery thrillers? Or YA mystery thrillers? Or the combination of that with Historical fiction?

Either way, this didn't work for me, and neither did The Forest of Stolen Girls when I read it two years ago. They both just feel lifeless to me. Should I bother trying out The Red Palace? It has a much higher rating than her other two. We'll see.
