I think I learned that character-driven books are way more important and interesting to me than plot-centered books. The characters are too flat, it’s too reminiscent of LOTR, and I just hated reading it, even if I only got 9% through.

DID NOT FINISH: 39%

I made it 10h into this book and was still only 40% through. It was just moving too slow. I had a similar issue with Way of Kings.

Damn I love this trilogy. The characters, the universe, the plot, the magic… all so beautiful and well-developed and I just have so many feelings.

4.5 stars and SO MANY QUESTIONS.

This is my second book by Islington and I’m just loving how he writes his fantasy. It’s a very familiar form and structure, with its pace marked by the timed unveils and revelations that I just LOVE in classic fantasy. But, he seems to take a classic fantasy and just flip it on its head, throwing his readers into something completely new. This is particularly well done because Islington’s characters are VERY smart, competent and capable, you feel like you’re there with them; You’re rolling along with what the characters are thinking and feeling, and you sorta know what’s going on.. and then when the story is flipped on its head, you’re just as confused as they are. It takes such a skill to bring your readers alongside the characters this way and I eat it up every time. I have sooo many questions, which is a perfect tee up for the second book.
