DID NOT FINISH: 74%

The writing feels very weak. I had to force myself to pick it up and kept feeling like it was a chore to do so.

Mildly entertaining strain of Fantasy Naming Disease, with a side effect of Chosen-One-itis.

If you're looking for an adequate example of "Oh, no, the Istlwyfoogies have taken the Bamnedyshamp and now there will be war between the Hompetflonpoos and the Thwirp!" type of fantasy, look no further.

Add a healthy dash of every main character is an 18 year old boy with a mysterious past (even the 5 girls (yes, it passes the Bechdel test - barely)) and a whiff of every adult is duplicitous and cunning, and you have yourself a perfectly fine big lump of text.

I honestly went into this book with little to no expectations as I basically knew nothing about this book going in. Thankfully, this might be my biggest surprise of the year so far! I was hooked from page 1 of this book and I did not want to put it down. The worldbuilding is fascinating and yet also very easy to understand. The characters are incredibly complex and likable and it did not take long before I was rooting for them to succeed. There is also a really interesting political element to this book that I think/hope will be expanded upon in the rest of this series which I can't wait to see. I also feel like this book is setting up a lot of things for this series yet it never felt like filler and I can't wait to see how things turn out. I could not predict where this book was going and I can't wait to see where this author takes this series. A brilliant book and the start to a series I can't wait to continue!
