This is such a fun book to read!!! It has the perfect mix of science, adventure, and funniness in it to make it a very satisfying and entertaining read. I could reread this book several times and I think it would take a while until I get bored with it. Please read it it's amazing

This is my first space sci-fi novel and wow was it engrossing! Despite being chock-full of scientific language and challenging concepts to understand, it still felt accessible to anyone who passed high-school chemistry and biology or even just has a basic understanding of space and science. What kept it exciting and engaging was the combo of our main char Grace’s flashbacks/memories of earth recovering over time, his vast knowledge of science, space, and experimentation, and his interactions with Rocky. I grew attached to his alien bestie and found myself wanting so badly for everything to work out for both of them. I enjoyed how past events got gradually revealed over time due to Grace's amnesia, and how it informed both readers and the Grace himself on his actual character and values before he lost his memory. This set up a great character development arc for when he was eventually faced with tough decisions in the present day. I also loved the ending as I found it different than what I expected, but satisfying and touching all the same. I am so curious how this one will be adapted into a movie and I have high expectations after enjoying this book so much!

Holy shit, I feel so smart now.

Actually this is very accessible as Sci-fi and was a pretty good introduction to the genre for me! Am I immediately going to start reading more about space? Absolutely not. That was enough for a few years maybe.

It took me a while to get going but I’m so damn emotional now. It does have a happy ending ❤️

My favorite quote was an alien saying “fist me!”
Ok I digress

For those of you who know me, you know that I struggle reading sci-fi (I tend to prefer experiencing sci-fi in visual format), but I had very little trouble reading this. A lot of the time, it felt like I was watching or living it, and I think that makes a difference for me.

This is a fairly well-known book, written by a fairly well-known author, but I'll briefly tell you what it's about anyway. This follows our main protagonist Ryland Grace who wakes up on a space ship in another star system with no memory of who he is or what he's doing. The book is told in two timelines, the current one aboard the Hail Mary, and a past timeline of the events leading up to how he got aboard the Hail Mary and why - it all has to do with saving the sun and in turn the planet. And all kinds of interesting things happen along the way.

As with most books I read, there were parts I really enjoyed and parts I enjoyed less.

The writing, while engaging and immersive, and generally well paced, irritated me at times, for no other reason than the words he chose and at times the dialogue.

The setting/world was well done and seemed well researched. I loved learning about the different planets and species that were being discovered.

The plot was interesting and was the fuel for the story, but it wasn't the main focus the majority of the time. Yes, saving the planet was important and all of their findings and actions directly related to saving the planets, but at it's core it was more about the characters.

Which brings me to the characters. Ryland was an interesting character and I found him relatable and fun to read about. I adored Rocky, who I'm not going to tell you much about, but he's the best and I lived and breathed for his and Ryland's interactions. Stratt was irritating. I liked her at first, but she got old really fast because she felt like she had one personality trait. The other characters were also interesting, the short time we spent with them, but nothing too special overall.

All in all, an enjoyable and fun read. This was my first Weir book, but I don't think it'll be my last.

I genuinely loved this book. There was a lot of science stuff that went way over my head that honestly could’ve been left out, but the story was wonderful and I cried.

Something I cannot get over is how aggressively obvious it was that a cis white man wrote this book.
He meets a full-on alien that reproduces by themself and still uses he/him pronouns??! Come on.
But I guess he’s just writing from his own perspective. Regardless, I did truly love this book.
