A deeply thorough biography of the previously overlooked founding father.  I would recommend it to fans of the musical, as seeing which parts of the adaptation are historical and which are not can be really interesting. Also for those with interest in the political history of the United States. All that said, this is an exhaustive biography of an extremely accomplished man, and many of the details do not make for engaging reading. The author is very good at keeping things moving, but the book is nonetheless glacially slow.

*in my best Lin-Manuel Miranda voice* I FINISHED ALEXANDER HAMILTON!

Where to begin. There is no doubt that this biography is prolific and exceptionally written. There's a reason why this book inspired LMM--Alexander Hamilton was an amazing, under-appreciated founding father who, until this book, had his story relatively untold. His life is an OG "started from the bottom now we're here" tale (can't believe I just quoted Drake in this review).

If you're interested in American history, this one is a can't-miss, but be warned--this book is deeeeeense. At 731 pages, not only it is written at a scholarly level, but 400 pages or so could easily be shaved and still tell Hamilton's story. My favourite parts were his early life and the Revolutionary War, but there was a lot of dull and dry in between.

Now I can't wait to see Hamilton!! Noooo idea how LMM turned this into what he did from this book.

We'll written and interesting biography on one of our nation's founding fathers. But very LONG!

Just fabulous. So much history - letters from and to Hamilton. Gives you such a sense of the beginnings of our country. Now I just need to get tickets to the show!!

Standard high quality biography, my main takeaway from this was more respect for the founding fathers - sure, they were kind of piece of shits that accepted slavery in exchange for the creation of a nation, but they were also lawyers, war veterans, educated in future Ivy League schools, well read in Plutarch and Hume and Hobbes, which I deeply long for when we have a president who thinks Plutarch is a planet.
