An enjoyable, fast-paced read, especially at the end. The descriptions of magic, friendship and sisterhood felt alive and leapt of the page. Part coming of age novel - a young girl finding freedom and falling in love for the first time in her life despite years of abuse - part magical realism, part mystery. There were lots of twists and turns that made me want to carry on reading.

This book has an interesting premise and delivers on it, for the most part. It explores themes of coming-of-age, family, friendship and trust. The world-building is my favorite aspect of this book: set in modern-day London within the things we cannot see (or what we think we cannot see). My main qualm with this book is its synopsis that sets an expectation that is not delivered in this book to a large degree, however, if you disregard the synopsis, it is still an excellent read. I look forward to reading the sequel and cannot wait to see what lies ahead for our protagonist.

This was way darker than I thought it would be and definitely needed trigger warnings.

There are a number of things to like about this book: Anna as a lead is easy to connect and feel empathy for her story, the magic system and world is interesting and slightly different in some ways to what I've read before.
The pacing made part of the story drag for me. The abuse is graphic at times and yet we spend ages focusing on teenage girl spats which feel like a shame game. The book really leans into slut shaming and for me, it never really addressed that as being wrong.
I don't think I'm intrigued enough by to continue with the series.
