This was absolutely, utterly, devastatingly boring. I surprised I didn't skim the last half of the book because goodness me. Really, I should have DNFed it because I simply didn't care about anything or anyone. But I pushed through, thinking it might get better. But no. Don't force yourself to finish books, guys!

I think the one thing I appreciated about this book is that Fia learned to love herself. She was right, in the end. She didn't know how to love herself because everyone told her what or who to be, or that they didn't like aspects of her. She found someone who loved her as she was, which in turn, helped her love herself. Rogan and Eala can go away...forever and I couldn't care less.

The writing was VERY flowery and the world-building was both there and yet...not. It felt very surface level in that... Are we in some medieval fantasy world? Why are Rogan and Fia not encountering other human people? Why do they not really encounter many Folk in Tír na nÓg? Why are we incredibly limited to this one place with no context, no background or anything or anyone else? I also still didn't really understand how the Gates worked and how they actually entered Tír na nÓg over and over again.

Truly, this book was a waste of my time. Damn you, FairyLoot, and your pretty editions that suck me in.

3.5 stars! This was a solid read, the biggest reason it takes a hit in my eyes is that I only ever saw this advertised as a swan lake retelling and it was very much it’s own thing aside from the shape shifting maidens. I still enjoyed it, but would’ve liked to have known before jumping in. I LOVED the audio book narrator, she had the most gorgeous accent.
