A classic I return to periodically. As someone who has lived through massive changes in the past 75 years, I find it interesting to read about another time in history when “progress” resulted in upheaval, displacement, and confusion.

A contemporary of Dickens, Gaskell is not read nearly enough (although the BBC. Has done a fine job taking some of her work and putting it on the screen). This story is something of a working man's Pride and Prejudice, with some slightly less scandalous events, but in this reader's opinion, better character arcs, a fascinating sense of place, a thorough contemplation of unions and mill towns, and an ending just as satisfying as Austen's.

Wow—could not put it down. Loved the romance, the social commentary and the writing. Long but I didn’t want it to end and flew through it. Can’t believe I’ve gone this long without reading anything from this author.

Started slow, but got better. Reminded me of Pride and Prejudice.

I was enjoying this book, but not enough to finish it. It's rather slow and since my Jane Austen book club already met to discuss it, I'm going to make it as done. I got about 40% through and just have so many other books to tackle. If it were a bit more interesting and I had a bit more time to read it, I would likely finish it, but need some fresh material and so I've decided to stop.
