This was not my favorite book ever, but I’m happy I finally read it! I appreciated the political commentary, John Thornton’s dedication to… everything, and Gaskell’s sheer gall at killing characters mercilessly. Some of the drama was too soapy for me, but others had an appropriate slow burn.
