3.5 stars. I was in the mood for something Victorian, and Gaskell's North & South was less than $2 on Kindle. I enjoyed the BBC series when it came out, so I thought I'd give it a try. I enjoyed it overall, though I could have done with a little less labor politics and a little more romance. Took off half a star for the abrupt and anti-climatic ending. Would recommend with caveats.

I almost want to give it five stars but the first hundred or two hundred pages were boring. But it got better. It got funny, it got deep, and it got real, despite it being a bit ridiculous. It was ridiculous in a good way.

I can see why this gets compared to Pride and Prejudice. There are similar snobberies and un surmountable barriers between the leading man and lady.

But North and South is a bit grittier and examines hardships endured by mill workers.

An interesting observation of the differences in character between industrial communities others

I was recommended this book as being similar to Pride & Prejudice, and that is true in that it shares the antagonistic relationship between our two love interest. In the end I was actually very ensnared by the frank and open dialogue surrounding class, and social economic status and mobility during England's industrial revolution. Class is an abundant them in P&P as well but it is really center stage in North & South, rather than our heroine speaking out of concern for her own economic position, Margaret educates herself on the needs of the working class and advocates for their needs.

This was not simply a love story, but a look into the lives of those living in various locales during the Industrial Revolution. It included thought-provoking conversations and deep material that would not usually be covered in a novel, without being dry or dull. The characters were well drawn, and the story moved along at an enjoyable pace.
