Pippi Långstrump

Astrid Lindgren

I read Pippi aloud to my 7 year old and she really enjoyed it. She loved how imaginative and adventurous Pippi is, and appreciated her obstinateness and orneriness. I thought some of the chapters lacked much adventure, but for the most part, Pippi was exciting and humorous.

My 6 & 8-year-old boys laughed a lot and were eager to hear more of this story!

I recently read Pippi to my 8 year old twins. It was such fun to revisit an old favorite! The kids loved it.

Brilliant childhood classic!!

Pippi Longstocking was a psychopath. She liked to tell racist lies to see how her audience would react.

While Pippi is a fun and unique character, the plot and other characters left me wanting more. Anika and Tommy did not have any personality traits and we're not really thought about or worked out. The stories we're only based on the shock effect of "girl does thing no one expects her to do". While I appreciated the parts where Pippi opened up about feeling left out because she "couldn't behave herself properly", yet it wasn't explored any deeper. I was rather dissapointed. It relies on randomness to delight it's readers, which did not have it's intended effect on me. Sorry mama Lindgren.

Älskar Pippi så mycket <333

In some ways Pippi is the poster-girl for White FeminismTM.

She's brash, outspoken, subverting gendered expectations, but often at the expense of others, usually people of color, who are exoticized in Pippi's tall-tales of foreign countries civilized ladies wouldn't dream of discussing. Make no mistake this is a form of racism, just a classy sort of racism.

I'm sure Pippi was a beacon of hope to young ladies of the distant past, however I'm glad to say that my (future) daughters will have a shelf of heroines at their disposal who don't have to stand on another's back to become taller/mightier.

Hey, you've come a long way, baby (well, maybe!)

I loved this movie as a kid. The book is slightly too old for my 4-year-old and I found I skipped over the passages where Pippi was rambling/lying about her experiences in other countries. But otherwise, Pippi's antics amused Elsa.
