I read this book as part of the Rory Gilmore Reading Challenge. Pippi Longstocking was a popular movie for Lorelai and Rory - and as a kid, whenever I saw pictures and video of Pippi, I loved seeing a fiery redhead with freckles! She always beats to her own drum, stands up to others, and thinks outside the box. She lives in a non-traditional situation but always finds a way to make it work. Obviously being an older book, some things that Pippi did would not happen today but it was a funny read.
Although I loved the movies as a child, it was strange to read the original text as an adult. I think I had anticipated it being a bit more of a morality tale, and Pippi's pure heart shining through at key plot points and moments. Although Pippi is heroic, her good deeds are more accidental or coincidental. I had very much thought of her as a female Peter Pan, when in reality she's closer to Amelia Bedelia. Also, I was surprised by how often I found myself actively frustrated or annoyed with Pippi. It's not simply her ignorance of "proper society" and conventional relationships, but her intentional ignorance of literacy, schooling, respect for other people, etc. Then there's this weird tic of hers where she lies, but you don't know if it is real or not. Sometimes she confesses to the lie, but other times she does not.
All in all, she is a fascinating protagonist for her contrary ways and her time-tested popularity, despite things like, you know, being kind of illiterate and stuff.

A wonderful adventurous tale of the most unique little girl. Shows how you can go against the norm and have a big heart

Little girls should read this book. It has great messages of empowerment.
We. Loved. This. Book. What a great read aloud with the kids! My 4yo and I would often have to stop reading to laugh at Pippi’s antics. I don’t typically like ridiculous or silly stories, but there was so much humanity in Pippi’s character that I couldn’t help but fall in love with her. I know this will be a book my children return to time after time.
