Started reading this on the subway during my last minute solo trip to New York, which felt apt. Also, definitely missed my stop.

4.5 something about the way CMQ writes 20-something characters having existential and identity crises has been really hitting these days (┬┬﹏┬┬)

I don’t know how to feel about a sci-fi romance like this, if I’m being honest. The premise felt unrealistic and a bit difficult to wrap my head around with all the space time continuum stuff going on but the characters are beautifully written, unique, and loveable as all hell. The love stories are sweet & strong. The found family in this book is so genuine and real. I just wish the main thread of the story wasn’t about traveling through time.

Love how this book shows how amazing is a queer community, I did not expect that the book about time traveling will be interesting. But it is. I love some of the characters. But I wish the ending was a bit darker, but overall it's still a good book and very informative.

August's roommates were my favorite part, i love the found family trope, which made me a little disappointed with their brief plot line resolutions, but other than that i enjoyed the plot and was satisfied with the ending. i appreciated the writing, it's improved from their debut Red, White & Royal Blue. i was extremely uncomfortable during the public sex scene 😬. 4⅜ stars
cover design review: ★★☆☆☆. yikes, it's just overwhelming. let's count the different typefaces: author name (1), bestselling author (2), title (3), "a novel" (4), Q line symbol (5), and tagline (6). all the different colors, three shades of purplish pink that don't go well together, the "S" is higher than the "TOP" in "STOP", Jane's posture looks stiff and unnatural, just very disappointing. the Spanish edition is gorgeous 😭 and the Portuguese edition is good too, love the art style and the easter eggs from the story but i think the character design is somewhat juvenile

Second read review:
In my second read review, I'll be putting the parts of the book that I put on my reading journal because I have no words to explain it separately and I wasn't able to take note of things in my first read.

All y'all have to know is, I'm never changing my rate in this book. I STILL love it.

What's wrong with the Q?
By Andrew Gould and Natasha Brown

...
[Photo depicts commuters on a Brooklyn-bound Q train on the Manhattan Bridge. In the foreground is a mid-twenties Chinese American woman with short hair and a leather jacket, frowning up at a flickering light fixture.]
Page 22 - Brooklyn resident Jane Su takes the Q to Manhattan and back every day.
~Damn. I can't freaking believe Casey McQuiston already gave us the full name of Jane here.~
Page 22 - August's favourite childhood movie is Say Anything

~Secondhand embarrassment done right here. I'm wheezing.~
Page 37 - August and Jane said their first name to each other.
Page 38 - ...August learns that the Q is a time, a place, and a person.
Page 38 - But there's a train that comes by around 8:05 at the Parkside Ave. Station, and August has never once missed it since she decided it was hers. And it's also Janes's, and Jane is always exactly on time, so August is too.
And so, the Q is a time.
Page 40 - Some days, when she's working long hours or locked up in her room for too long, Jane is the only person who's kind to her all day.
And so, the Q is a person.

Page 55-56 - "Does it ever, like...I don't know. Make you lonely? To love somebody who can't meet you there?"
She regrets it immediately, but Annie laughs.
"Sometimes. But, you know, the feeling? When you wake up in the morning and you have somebody to think about? Somewhere for hope to go? It's good. Even when it's bad, it's good."
Page 58 - Jane's listening to the song "New York Dolls"
Page 61 - "You're hoping you fall in love here?"
"Um-"
"Hey, maybe you will," Jane says...
~JANE! YOU'RE SMOOTH XD~
Page 63 - Jane laughs, which is rocketing straight up August's list of favorite sounds in the universe. She's gonna trap it in a shell like a sea witch.

Page 88 - "Oh my God, so she's dead? And she doesn't know she's dead? I can't even ask her on a date; how am I supposed to tell her she's dead?"
~August and Niko's convo had me wheezing XD~
Page 92 - The fact that Niko, Myla and August were there too but Isaiah's eyes are locked to Wes which is why he only called Wes <3
Page 92 - "Who was that?"
~Oh, Wes. It's alright. No need to be jealous.~
Page 94-95 - "I swear to God, if a ghost kills me, I'll haunt the shower," Wes says. "You guys will never have hot water again."
"We don't have hot water now," August points out.
"Fine, I'll haunt the toilet."
"Why do you want to haunt a bathroom, man?" Isaiah asks.
"It's where people are most vulnerable," Wes says, like it's obvious. Isaiah frowns thoughtfully and nods.
Page 99 - It would be really helpful if Jane would stop being confusing and gorgeous while they're trying to figure out whether or not she's human.
~August...XD~
Page 99 - "You're out late," she observes.
~Jane POV: JEALOUSY, JEALOUSY~ (a song by Olivia Rodrigo)~

~The Netflix account XD~

Page 103 - Hint: When Jane touches August
Page 106-110 - I remember that this is the part where I fell in love harder with One Last Stop and got scared for a moment that it might be an abyss XD but I'm glad it is. I fell in a deep or seemingly bottomless chasm for this book <3

Page 112 - "This is getting repetitive," says Jane's voice, her chin suddenly on August's shoulder.
Page 113 - And she can't believe Jane had the nerve, the audacity, to become the only thing August can't resist: a mystery.
Page 114 - August lost everything and thought that maybe, if she could become someone who didn't have anything to lose, she'd never have to feel that way again.
Page 117 - "You're wearing that red lipstick for her, though," Myla points out.
Page 118 - Hint: "...sparks."

Page 127 - She reaches over and gently swipes frosting from that morning's donut off August's bottom lip. The eye contact is so terribly close that August has to look down before her face says something she can't take back.

Page 187 - "Boo," says Jane's voice.
Page 189 - She tamps down a smile and says, "That's him," and August laughs and wants so badly to know what it feels like to show off the person who's yours from across the crowd.
Page 189 - ..."That's her," and she guesses she does know. Maybe what she really wants is to be the person across the crowd who belongs to someone.
Page 192 - She touches a hand to her mouth and staggers back, eyes wide, and August's stomach drops. She's remembering something. Someone. Another girl Who's not August.
~This is why I DO NOT agree with the kisses T-T Though, in this part Jane remembers everything.~

"I know," Niko says back. "Did you just propose to me?"
"Oh shit, I guess I did?" Myla opens the door and shoves Gabe through it.
"I'm so mad at you," Niko says. "I already have a ring at home."
Page 369 - Wes stares at Annie for a full five seconds, and says, "Oh Jesus Christ, I'm in love with you."
Annie blinks. "Can you say that without looking like you're gonna throw up?"
"I'm-uh-" He visibly gulps down whatever else he was going to say. "Actually, yeah, I am. Yeah. In love with you."
Page 375 - The I LOVE YOU
Page 379 - And here they are. August and Jane and the third rail and the thing she's prepared to do, and Jane is looking at August like she's breaking her heart.
~My first time reading this, I cried through it and the next chapter. Like, how does Casey McQuiston expect me to be able to read this the first time with clear eyesight, no tears forming?~

16

TW: Anxiety, Panic Attack

First read review:
How do you do this? This book exceeded every expectation I have when <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/7377626-star">Star</a>  kept recommending One Last Stop on her page (<a href="https://www.instagram.com/littlemissstar55/">@littlemissstar55 on IG</a>). I finished reading this last month but can't form anything to say to review it. All I can say after reading OLS is, IT IS SO FREAKING GOOD, AMAZING, FANTASTIC, AWESOME, INCREDIBLE, hot... EHEM anyways there are a lot more synonyms I want to add, but really, I LOVE IT SOO MUCH. It has been days, but all I could think about are Jane, August, Niko, Myla, Wes, Isaiah, the train, the tracks, the 'I love you' & 'I'm in love with you,' the representations, etc. See? That's why it took soo long for me to post a review. I could make an entire essay for this book willingly.

I love sad books so when I thought this one will be one of those...I can't handle it. I won't accept that Jane suddenly
disappears
. I love them to be endgame soo much that I cried when August has to believe that
Jane is back in her timeline. And then I cried again because Jane is there. She's back. I've cried because Jane was gone and also because she came back.
This book...I'm done. If someone asks me why is my standard for sapphic books so high? I'll show them this.

I knew instantly that Augie and Jane have a connection because I'm that person who likes to connect things with the clues given by authors in their writing XD I'm that person who likes the thrill of finding things out and say, 'I knew it!' Though, I can't help but hurt for August's mother, who spent almost half her life finding where Auggie had been. Only to find out that the case closed without ever reuniting with her brother but finally having closure.

August POV - ...August learns that the Q is a time, a place, and a person.
Jane's letter - August is a time, a place, and a person.

THE PARALLEL. I LOVE IT. I LOVE THEM.

SOME of my FAVE lines (I'm going to add when I've re-read it. I was too immersed in reading One Last Stop that I wasn't able to save some of the lines or scenes I loved):

Chapter 1, Page 13
Truth is, when you spend your whole life alone, it's incredibly appealing to move somewhere big enough to get lost in, where being alone looks like a choice.

Chapter 2
Page 38, Line 16-17 - ...August learns that the Q is a time, a place, and a person.
Page 38, Line 25-29 - But there's a train that comes by around 8:05 at the Parkside Ave. Station, and August has never once missed it since she decided it was hers. And it's also Janes's, and Jane is always exactly on time, so August is too.
And so, the Q is a time.
Page 40, Line 23-26 - Some days, when she's working long hours or locked up in her room for too long, Jane is the only person who's kind to her all day.
And so, the Q is a person.

Chapter 3, Page 55
"Does it ever, like...I don't know. Make you lonely? To love somebody who can't meet you there?" - August to Annie

Chapter 6, Page 114, Line 18-20
August lost everything and thought that maybe, if she could become someone who didn't have anything to lose, she'd never have to feel that way again.

Chapter 13, Page 335
"Sometimes I wonder if I fell out of time because I never really belonged where I started and the universe is trying to tell me something." - Jane to August

Chapter 17, Page 416
August is a time, a place, and a person. - A letter of Jane to August

I know relatability to a character isn’t everything but there is something special in connecting with a character and their experiences, especially when it isn’t one you’ve gotten to see depicted before. It’s just nice to read about a 23yo who doesn’t have shit worked out, who is afraid of graduating, who has no experience in love, who’s working for the first time, living in a big city away from all she knows—that isolation, being miles away from anyone who not only knows you but also /cares/ about you. Being broke af, being tempted to skip class on days that start off wrong or just wanting to spend some more time with friends.  Making friends, especially close friends, when you’ve never really had any and don’t know how (I absolutely adore the found family in this book).
Moving to a city and having to take public transport everyday—falling in love with a stranger over a train ride and forgetting they exist once you alight.
Having a crush and just, a very deep infatuation for the first time—gosh August and Jane were so cute and the audiobook narrator for this book emotes August’s inner thoughts phenomenally.

I loved this book! I don’t typically choose to read contemporary romance but this one has a (paranormal-ish) twist! And the mystery was good and the character relationships & friendships were 💛💛💛 & I cried so much in the last quarter 😭
