Japanese Proust? I'm in.

about a horny boy growing into a horny adult and i’m his unhealthy relationship with his sexuality

4 ☆
sorrowful in a way... what is sadder than living as someone that we are not (knowing it full well) ? The great cogitation of this author was the tangible connection between platonic love and desire of the flesh, which he ultimately failed to put into words clearly (in this novel) because he couldn’t even considered his homosexuality as a natural thing. I had however a feeling of incomplete during the last pages, only the psychological aspect and all the implicit influence of this presupposed "normality" on the question of the sexuality of Mishima made me adore this autobiographical work. He definitely had unique thought mechanisms that I identified with myself (not always healthy tho). I think I will soon read more of his works
reflective

Wow. Such a raw take on the confusion that comes with emerging as a homosexual. Mishima's use of language romanced me until I was pregnant with the beauty and despair of his main character.

This is the gem of Mishima's bibliography. Books like this are why I read.

This is so hard to rate. I didn't enjoy reading it very much as the writing style is convoluted, but as it's a lived experience it's understandably written so.

The themes explored are important and it was interesting to learn a bit about what war time Japan was like. But eventually the end left me feeling unsatisfied as I wanted to hear more of a resolution, but perhaps there isn't one and that's okay, too. 2.5 stars rounded down
