I heard some things I know, learned some new things I didn't know, and appreciated the insights into the daily experience of living in a fat body in a very fatphobic society. Would reread (audiobook).

As a mid-sized white woman, I needed this perspective. We all have anti-fat bias SO engrained within us, and it hurts the people who are the most vulnerable. I adore Aubrey Gordon so much, wish the audiobook were read by her!

Required reading for everyone but particularly folks in positions of power (ie. medical professionals, politicians, etc). The author goes into detail on the harms of diet culture and anti-fat bias while also connecting fat justice to the larger body justice movement (disability justice, migrant justice, LGBTQIA+, people with uteruses, trans folks, intersex folks, racism, Indigenous sovereignty, etc).

This is incredibly well-resesrched and well-written and I highly recommend giving it a read! At the same time, this was a very tough read so please check the content warnings. The author goes into a fair bit of detail on the bullying she received/continues to receive and it can be v triggering.

This should be required reading for everyone, but especially for everyone in a position of power or authority. From med school students to policy makers to lawyers and judges, to police academy recruits, this book is just critical.

Anyone who is familiar with Ms. Gordon's work as Your Fat Friend knows her writing style to be lyrical and eloquent, passionate and captivating - and the book is no different from anything else she has written in this respect. What is different is that is a deep dive into the experiences of living as a truly fat person in a world that despises and reviles us, not only from her perspective, but from the lens of culture, media, medicine, law, etc. Essentially, every aspect of human life.

Ms. Gordon gives a voice to the voiceless, she writes from the heart, with deep empathy and compassion. But her writing is also sharp and intelligent, with plenty of resources and science to make this book not only one of personal experience, but one of research and thought.

I will definitely read this book multiple times, particularly her closing argument, such as it is... her vision is refreshing and so desperately needed.
