This book should be required reading for all humans. Aubrey Gordon so clearly identifies how everything we know about health is wrong and how it has harmed so many people. Gordon not only pulls from her life experience, but includes tons of detailed research in advocating for a more just future.

This book is really important. Really really important. It explodes so many myths, stereotypes, stigmatization, bias, and harmful ideas and behaviors about weight and food with exhaustive research and accessible writing. It had so much food for thought I could often only read a chapter at a time so I could pause to take it in, think about it and look inward and outward critically. I learned a ton and it made me really examine the toxic soup that we've all been swimming. You should read it, and then listen to her podcast Maintenance Phase to keep learning.

this is one of the best books i’ve read all year. the author’s writing is absolutely brilliant; she is incisive, identifying the various ways in which our world is stacked against fat people and the anti-fat lessons that are gospel in our culture. and i’m so grateful that she shared her personal experiences as well - this book is deeply courageous. would recommend this to anyone, but especially my thin/straight size friends!

This book took me a while to get through -not because it was poorly written or uninteresting, but because I was continually horrified to learn how fat people are treated in our society and needed breaks to process what I was learning. Gordon is phenomenal at painting the picture of what it is like to be a fat, queer woman and why this treatment is not okay (something that should be obvious, but isn't since she had to write a book about it). After exposing the reader to facts and personal experiences to help them understand, she provides the reader with action points for how to be better and positively change society.
I love this book. I desperately hope that it becomes required reading in medical, nursing, and dietetic programs (at the very least). Thank you, Aubrey Gordon, for writing this very important book.

If you're already an avid listener of the Maintenance Phase podcast (#methodologyqueen #itwascapitalismallalong) then you've probably heard about 65% of this research already. But the other 35% is heartbreaking personal experiences from Aubrey and others about just how shittily this world treats fat/plus-sized/bigger/overweight etc. people and how little interest there is in truly understanding the nature of weight and health and well-being. I loved it but I did get teary eyed a few times; it was something I personally needed and more people should read it!
