TLDR: I loved the characters but hated the storyline.

Aida and Nero are amazing and I love them. Cal, Seb, and Miko were also funny sometimes.

I hated the love at first sight, and the typical "dumbass MC is too scared to tell their partner something scary because they don't want them to hate them, but they find out and hate them." So fucking annoying and overused. I also feel like people blamed Yelena way more than what fit the "crime".

Honestly, Sebastian was my least favorite of the Gallos. Although, his book WAS better than Dante's...

i’ve been looking forward to sebastian’s story since the first book and omg it exceeded my expectations. sebastian and yelena are both such complex characters and i feel like sophie lark did such an amazing job developing their personalities.

the plot twists in this book were 10/10. only part that i found a bit annoying was yelena’s secret. it was definitely frustrating to read but definitely did not keep me from enjoying the story as a whole.

omg this book was stressful

I have no words. This was a fantastic finish to the Brutal Birthright series. While the end did feel a bit rushed, I still enjoyed it nonetheless. I cannot wait to begin the next series!

I am 80% or so through this audiobook, almost finished, but this was already a 1 star at the 30-40% mark.

A stupid bitch, dumb as rocks heroine with no sense of of pride or self preservation.

She finally escapes the dungeon her husband puts her in, and instead of doing something smart, she willingly puts herself in danger, trying to play hero on a family (brother/father/husband) who couldn't give two shits about her.

If she were just dumb, that would be one thing, but she was also desperate with no backbone as well, because she literally got shot saving Sebastian's life, only for him to not give a shit about that and put her in a dungeon for days, then come down to humiliate her with anal sex with no lube.

Yet, all she wanted was to "please" him... Girl, look how he's treating you! You think you deserve that because you "love" him...?!

Pathetic.

I'll forgive stupid (sometimes), but desperate, no pride and no sense of self-worth is where I draw the line with heroines.

Stand the fuck up, girl!

This is so far the worst couple I have read from Sophie Lark. And that is saying something, since I didn't even like any of the couples that preceded this one.

What a way to end a series!  🫣  I mean talk about intense, I felt it acutely in this book.  The last Gallo standing really showed up for the mafiosos.  I enjoyed most of the story, a few things felt cliche and predictable.  Like come on guys!!!  The writing's on the wall that some of these moves turning sour were pretty plain spoken, but I couldn't stop turning the page.  Lark's characters and writing style saw me through.  It was also great to get a brief goodbye with each Gallo sibling (Aida is still my favorite...love you girl! 🍓).

I suppose this could be read as a standalone, but it's better to read the other's in the series first since there's lots of cameos from past characters.

Highlights/Tropes:
🇮🇹 He's the last man standing, the youngest Gallo in Chicago's Italian Mafia
🇷🇺 Russian Mafia Princess with a cruel father
🇮🇹 He falls fast & hard

🇷🇺 Naive but clever

🇷🇺 Sexy paino
🇮🇹 Just plain sexy 😝

nah what yelena did was terrible imo. but i wish she and adrian would've made amends but i guess not.

4.5 ⭐️

This was definitely my favorite of the series! I think the feeling that encompasses how I felt after reading this book was “bittersweet”. So many great things about this book, but also plenty of sad things as well.

I already began this book upset for Sebastian for what he experienced in the first book. I was eager to see how he navigated through that loss, and it seemed to me that Yelena was what helped him through that journey. They were instantly a cute couple, finding tranquility in each other that they otherwise would not be able to find on their own. I loved their connection and instant chemistry.

Sebastian was an interesting character, definitely one of my favorites out of all. I still feel conflicted in his ending, however, because it seems like
Spoiler he ended up being the Don out of necessity, but not because he truly wanted to. He never was interested in that life, and ever since he lost basketball, it’s like he had no other choice. So seeing his ending as becoming the new Don was saddening, even if he had Yelena who was his happy ending. I don’t know if that makes sense, but everyone else in his family were able to choose what they wanted—Dante leaving to be with his family, not wanting anything to do with the mafia anymore. Nero only wanting to focus on the business-end of the mafia, and Aida working with her husband in becoming mayor.
Spoiler

That leads me into also saying
Spoiler that the Gallo family were no longer the same at the end of this book, which also was sad as hell! First, Enzo dying!! I knew that was going to happen, BUT NOT LIKE THAT! Ummm why was it so horrific??? And then Dante leaving (and never coming back by the end) was another nail in the coffin that solidified that this family was drifting away from each other. And I also felt like throughout the books, Sebastian’s struggle was dismissed by his family members, mainly out of not knowing how to help when nothing can be changed about it. And I was kind of wanting to see them face it head on in this book, and not hide away from the fact that he got handed a shitty stick. But I felt like he actually ended up the bad guy because of his naivety regarding Yelena’s father, even though they didn’t really treat him that way. Ugh this is just a long winded way of me saying that my feelings towards the ending was kinda ambiguous…I don’t know what to make of it.
Spoiler

BUT I do know that their children has a series of their own, so I’m eager to go into that soon. Maybe then I’ll get some closure regarding the Gallo family specifically. This book was great and I ATE IT UP! Sebastian was a complete sweetheart — but could be a demon if wanted to lol — and Yelena was badass who softened around Sebastian. They fit each other so well, and it was especially great to see Miko and Nessa again in this book (they’re always so freaking cute)
