The author wrote so passionately in defense of incest you'd think they were incestuous themself šŸ˜ VERY well-written though, and a compelling (albeit nauseating) read.

i remember my dad got me a copy of this book ages ago and i dont remember reading it but i remembered like the beginning and one scene that ended up being right near the end so clearly i read the entire book at some point and it was just completely wiped from my memory but it was pretty good i really liked the writing the beginning was really slow but once i was like 40% through it started picking up and it was a good halloween read it wasnā€™t creepy but it was very disturbing and gross
like chris and cathy .. ew and then i googled the sequels and read the plots of all of them and they actually end up getting married and having a life together it's crazy the plots of the rest of the books r INSANEEEE this plot was just like oh nooo we r locked in the attic and we're not getting sunlight or enough food šŸ˜Ÿ i'm making it sound bad it wasn't it was just tame compared to the rest of the series apparently .. when it turned out that the mum was poisoning them and not the grandmother i gasped and when cory died i gasped too but i don't know why because he was the one with the least personality it was pretty obvious he was gna die
this book is sigmund frueds dream come true

ā€œPatience. I coloured patience grey, hung over with black clouds. I coloured hope yellow, just like that sun we could see for a few short morning hours. Too soon the sun rose high in the sky and disappeared from view, leaving us bereft, and staring at blue.ā€

I have never felt such pain before. I have never hated, yet loved a book so dearly.

Cathy is the main protagonist of this novel and she has a strong and mature voice from the beginning.
You watch her grow and learn through the years of living within the confines of that attic. Her pain and her loneliness.

You watch as she struggles with going against everything she thought was right or wrong.

This book has some seriously dark themes. It is not for the faint hearted, but itā€™s definitely a book that will make you think.

This is easily 5 stars for me. Iā€™ve never read something so traumatic that may have entailed with a lot I mean kids locked in an attic you can say much buuut it was still pretty fast paced. But holy wow trigger warning āš ļø thereā€™s incest rape literally child abuse and child death. If you are sensitive to any of these things please do not read. I live my life with true crime podcasts and books so itā€™s hard to trigger but it still affects me. This entire book heavily breaks my heart. Though I wasnā€™t crying I still ached for all the loss I donā€™t even know what could possibly happen in continuing the series but canā€™t wait to find out
